Hailey Bieber opens up for first time about ‘surprise’ pregnancy and high-risk miscarriage condition

Hailey Bieber talked candidly about the complications she endured during her pregnancy.

I was so worried to hear that Hailey, the founder of Rhode, was dealing with a really frightening health issue right before she and Justin welcomed their little boy, Jack Blues, who’s almost two now! It’s amazing how she handled everything, especially with Justin just celebrating his birthday too. It really puts things into perspective.

Hailey recently discussed her pregnancy on the SHE MD podcast with Mary Alice Haney and her doctor, Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi. She revealed whether she and her husband had been trying to conceive or if the pregnancy, which occurred over two years ago, was unexpected.

The actress mentioned her doctor, explaining, ‘It came as a shock. My doctor had warned me this might occur, saying she felt like…”

Dr. Aliabadi replied: ‘And I told her like, “Don’t get pregnant!”‘

Hailey talked about the medical condition she found out about before she got pregnant.

She explained that she had a uterine septum, and her doctor, Dr. A, had repeatedly advised her to get it checked before trying to get pregnant, as it could have caused problems.

The doctor wasn’t certain what was wrong, and mentioned a possible minor procedure. I responded that I wasn’t planning on getting pregnant anytime soon, and figured we’d deal with that if it ever happened. But then, surprisingly, I did get pregnant.

Dr. Aliabadi then said: ‘And then she calls me, and she’s like, “I’m pregnant!” And I’m like, “No!”

The physician went on to explain what the condition is and the risks that are associated with it.

Dr. Aliabadi explained that a uterine septum is something people are born with – it’s genetic. Essentially, it’s like having a normal uterus, but with a thin wall growing inside, dividing the uterine cavity.

Septal defects can range from mild to severe, and we determine the severity using ultrasound. A defect less than 1 centimeter is considered mild, while a defect between 1 and 2 centimeters is moderate.

Hailey added that she believes that her uterine septum was moderate.

Dr. Aliabadi explained that my condition was moderate, affecting between 1 and 3 percent of women. She also noted that a moderate diagnosis increases the risk of miscarriage.

She had a 25 to 40 percent chance of miscarriage and a 10 to 20 percent chance of delivering the baby prematurely.

Hailey explained that they were more worried about the baby’s septum developing properly. As the baby grew, they were relieved to see it expanding and opening as it should.

Her doctor agreed with her, acknowledging they were fortunate and her pregnancy had a positive outcome.

Dr. Aliabadi said: ‘And I’ll never forget, as I was telling her, “Well, these are the risks.”

She looked at me and said she was confident everything would be alright. I remember that moment, and I told her I felt the same way.

On top of the usual stress of pregnancy, Hailey had previously shared that she faced some frightening complications while giving birth.

Even though Hailey spent nine months preparing her body with exercise and pelvic floor work, and felt stronger than ever, she had a very difficult labor. She recently shared that giving birth was the most challenging experience of her life.

Hailey recently opened up about her childbirth experience in a May 2025 interview with Vogue, describing it as incredibly difficult. She explained that doctors had to induce labor by breaking her water, and she labored for several hours without any pain medication like an epidural.

At 39 weeks pregnant, Hailey’s water broke, and she needed to be induced. Doctors gave her medication to start contractions and also used a special balloon to help open her cervix.

Despite finally being able to hold her baby after a long 18-hour labor, Hailey faced further complications. She experienced a severe postpartum hemorrhage and honestly feared she might not make it through the experience.

Hailey admitted she was frightened by the possibility of a life-threatening complication. She explained that while she completely trusted her doctor, the severity of the bleeding – and the fact that people can die from such things – did make her worry. Despite her fear, she felt reassured knowing her doctor would do everything to protect her.

Hailey was thrilled to finally have her baby home safely, but she shared that it took time to adjust to her body after giving birth. She explained that she needed to be kind to herself and accept that it wasn’t realistic to immediately regain her pre-pregnancy figure.

She’s observed changes in her body, specifically that her hips have widened and her breasts have grown. While it took time, she’s now come to terms with the fact that her body has changed and isn’t what it used to be.

During a recent, open conversation, Hailey shared that she’s been struggling to adjust to changes in her life and deal with gossip about her relationship with Justin Bieber.
