D&D Officially Returns to Beloved Campaign Setting in 2026

The eerie mists of Ravenloft are returning in 2026 with a brand new sourcebook, bringing fresh adventures and challenges for players.

Most Dungeons & Dragons campaigns take place on a single world, like Krynn in Dragonlance or Athas in Dark Sun. However, Ravenloft is different – it’s made up of many separate, isolated realms called the Domains of Dread. These are dark and terrifying places inspired by gothic horror, each ruled by a powerful Darklord. Interestingly, these Darklords are also trapped within their own domains, making them prisoners just like the people they rule.

Strahd Will Return In Ravenloft: The Horrors Within

Wizards of the Coast is bringing back the classic Ravenloft setting for Dungeons & Dragons. The new edition, Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, will reimagine the terrifying Domains of Dread and the creatures that inhabit them.

I’m really excited about Ravenloft: The Horrors Within! From what I understand, it’s going to build on Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft from 2021 – that book had some awesome new character options, creatures, and really fleshed out the different parts of the Domains of Dread. It sounds like they’re updating everything to work with the latest Dungeons & Dragons rules from 2024, which is great!

D&D’s Domains of Dread Are Being Revamped (Again)

As a huge fan, I’ve been really curious about what Ravenloft: The Horrors Within does with Strahd von Zarovich. He’s such an iconic Dungeons & Dragons villain, and the original Ravenloft module from 1983 is a classic. I’m excited to see how this new content builds on that legacy!

The campaign Curse of Strahd is a fan favorite Dungeons & Dragons adventure, and with its 10th anniversary this year, many were hoping for a revisit to Barovia. However, it appears Ravenloft: The Horrors Within may be the only new gothic horror content players will receive. While the Dungeons & Dragons plans for 2026 are still mostly unknown, there’s still a possibility a new Strahd campaign could be announced.

There’s a chance that the upcoming Ravenloft: The Horrors Within will offer material to help update the 2016 Curse of Strahd campaign to work with the latest 2024 Dungeons & Dragons rules. Fans will likely appreciate any new additions to this popular setting, but a refreshed Strahd campaign would be especially exciting.

Strahd is widely considered one of the greatest villains in the history of Dungeons & Dragons, so a new campaign bringing players back to Barovia would have delighted longtime fans. The good news is this announcement confirms that the Ravenloft setting hasn’t been abandoned, and more content is currently being developed.
