The new Marvel series, Spider-Noir, is making history for Spider-Man. It’s received the highest age rating of any TV show featuring the superhero, signaling a darker, more mature direction for a franchise usually known for being family-friendly.
Spider-Noir creates new Marvel history
The new live-action Spider-Noir series from Marvel has been given a TV-14 rating in the US – the most mature rating any Spider-Man TV show has ever received. This suggests the series will be darker and more intense than previous Spider-Man adaptations.
Older Spider-Man shows and movies generally received lower ratings. For example, the live-action film The Amazing Spider-Man and the animated series Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends and Spider-Man were all rated TV-PG. Recent versions still aim at younger viewers, with Spidey and His Amazing Friends geared towards preschoolers (TV-Y) and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man rated TV-PG.
Spider-Noir tackles more grown-up themes. While it’s not as explicit as shows like The Boys (which is rated for mature audiences), its TV-14 rating means it features stronger language, more intense action, and darker storylines than any previous Spider-Man TV series. Promotional materials suggest the show will explore topics like violence, mental stress, and alcoholism, likely contributing to this higher rating.
Nicolas Cage stars in the show, having previously voiced the character in animated form. Now, he plays a live-action version of Spider-Man, depicted as a private detective who’s called back into the world of crime-fighting. The series also features Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, and Brendan Gleeson.
The new series, Spider-Noir, will debut on MGM+ in the U.S. and on Prime Video everywhere else on May 25, 2026. Its TV-14 rating suggests a darker and more mature take on Spider-Man, potentially changing what viewers expect from Spider-Man shows.
