Okay, so I’m trying to figure out what to watch this weekend, and it looks like a bunch of great new movies just landed on streaming services like Netflix and BBC iPlayer! I’m pretty excited to check them out.
The selection includes what Quentin Tarantino himself calls a “masterpiece,” a classic action film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a more recent, highly successful action movie.

Best movie new to Netflix this week
Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 film, Inglourious Basterds, takes place during World War II. It tells the story of two groups – a squad of Jewish-American soldiers and a Jewish theater owner – who both try to kill a dangerous SS officer.
Christoph Waltz received an Academy Award for playing the second villain in the film, which also stars Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Eli Roth, and Diane Kruger.
On the podcast The Church of Tarantino, the director called Inglorious Basterds his “masterpiece.” Now you can watch it and decide for yourself – it’s currently streaming on Netflix.

Best movie new to Prime Video this week
The film Lost in Translation, starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson (who gained significant recognition for her performance), was a surprisingly big success. Released 23 years ago, it earned over $118 million despite being made with a modest $4 million budget.
The film was a critical success, earning a 94% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. CineWomen praised it, noting that it “remains mesmerizing all these years later.”
Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation tells the story of a famous actor who’s lost his spark. While in Tokyo filming commercials, he meets a young woman who’s also feeling lost – she’s traveling with her husband, a work-obsessed photographer. The two Americans form a quiet connection as they navigate their feelings in a foreign city.

Best movie new to BBC iPlayer this week
Schindler’s List is widely considered a cinematic masterpiece. This powerful and true story follows Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who bravely saved over a thousand Jewish people during the Holocaust by giving them jobs in his factories.
The Daily Gazette (Schenectady, NY) called the film a “masterpiece and a miracle.” It was a major awards success, winning 7 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Steven Spielberg.
Liam Neeson stars in the film, alongside Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes, who delivers a particularly impressive performance.

Best movie new to ITVX this week
The original Terminator film, released in 1984, launched a hugely successful franchise. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, a cyborg sent back in time with the mission to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and prevent the birth of her son, who is destined to save humanity in the future.
The movie, directed and written by James Cameron, who also made Avatar, received high praise. Film Frenzy called it “a classic for the ages,” while Empire noted it delivers thrills as effectively as its main character completes their missions.

Best movie new to Channel 4 this week
I just saw Polite Society and it was so good! It’s about this young woman who’s really into martial arts, and she’s convinced her sister is making a mistake by getting married. She decides to basically pull off a heist at the wedding to try and stop it, and gets her friends involved. It’s a really fun, action-packed movie!
The new film Polite Society is directed by Nida Manzoor, who also created the series We Are Lady Parts. It stars Ritu Arya, known for The Umbrella Academy, and Priya Kansara, famous for her role in Bridgerton.
With a 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics agree this movie is a wildly entertaining blend of Bollywood extravagance and British humor, happily breaking all the usual genre rules.
