Jackie Henderson has often said she enjoys working with Kyle Sandilands so much that it doesn’t feel like work at all – she considers him a close friend and their collaboration a pleasure, not just a job.
After 26 years as a hugely successful and highly-paid duo in Australian radio, the partnership abruptly ended on Tuesday. Henderson’s $100 million contract was cancelled when she announced she could no longer continue working with a man who had once been her closest friend.
The future of the Kyle and Jackie O Show on KIIS FM is now in doubt, and the careers of both hosts are at risk. Bruce Henderson has been sidelined after a major argument with Kyle Sandilands, which ARN (the radio network) has described as ‘serious misconduct.’ The dispute stemmed from Sandilands’s concern that Henderson was overly focused on astrology.
The conflict between them didn’t happen suddenly; it had been building for a while, with tensions gradually increasing before finally erupting recently.
Last year, friction started to show between Kyle and Jackie. Kyle openly expressed his frustration with Jackie’s unusual and somewhat eccentric hobbies, hinting she was out of touch with reality.
Sandilands’ harsh and open criticism of Henderson’s habits clearly showed their relationship was falling apart.
The fiery exchange was captured in an unaired segment.
In the audio recording, 54-year-old Sandilands is heard teasing 51-year-old Henderson, accusing him of being distracted and prioritizing phone calls over his job.
‘There’s a lot you don’t remember. Are you sure that you’re the full quid?’ Sandilands began.
I’m not sure if that’s right. Do you remember a little while ago when I mentioned being on the phone, and you told me I hadn’t been?
Everyone found it funny that you were always on your phone during breaks, even though you didn’t realize it at the time.
Honestly, it really bothered me when that happened. I was right in the middle of a phone call, doing research for an upcoming segment, and I distinctly remember being told to focus and get some work done. It felt a little undermining to have that happen while I was actively trying to prepare!
‘And I was like hang on a sec. I was actually doing work on the phone.’
The tit-for-tat continued before Henderson finally had enough.
‘Okay I’m going!’ she raged.
‘I’m constantly getting f***ing gaslit around here!’ she added, storming off.
‘Can’t mention anything to you ever. Can you believe it?’ Sandilands said as she left.
The tension between them continued this year. Just days before the recent conflict involving astrology, Kyle upset his co-star by making light of her past struggles with addiction, which had led to her receiving treatment at the Betty Ford Clinic in 2022.
Jackie was upset with Kyle for not reading her 2024 memoir, The Whole Truth, which described her struggles with addiction.
When Henderson confessed he wasn’t on her radar during his time as a judge on Australian Idol, Sandilands playfully responded, ‘If I ever read a book, it would be yours.’
‘Oh yeah, I don’t need to feel bad about it either,’ Henderson replied.
‘What do you mean?’ Sandilands pressed.
‘Because you didn’t read my book,’ Henderson responded.
Newsreader Brooklyn Ross asked, “Kyle, aren’t you curious about everything she went through in rehab?”
‘No. Is that in (the book)? What’d she do?’ Sandilands said, before clapping.
Kyle Sandilands explained he doesn’t appreciate excessive positivity or being told how to feel happy, as he’s content already. He specifically mentioned he doesn’t need someone like Betty Ford to tell him how to be happy.
‘I’m soft now,’ he added.
“Come on, are you serious?” Henderson snapped, clearly annoyed. “A leopard can’t change its spots, and people don’t change either, do they?”
A few days later, things escalated when Sandilands made fun of Henderson for getting an astrological chart created for Prince Andrew.
Henderson hasn’t been on the Kyle & Jackie O show since February 20th, after Karl Sandilands said he wasn’t concentrating enough at work.
While arguing on live television, Henderson became emotional and started crying while talking about the controversial royal figure.
Sandilands got angry at her when she proceeded to read out the royal’s birth chart.
He lambasted his co-star, claiming that her love for astrology was affecting her work.
When Henderson tried to protect herself and told him he was attacking her, he insisted he was simply stating what he believed to be true.
The clash left Henderson so rankled that she demanded a week off – never to return.
But there was notable tension long before the straw that broke the camel’s back.
I remember hearing that Henderson actually walked out of the studio last September. Apparently, he and the other presenter had a pretty heated disagreement during a commercial break, and he just couldn’t stay after that.
Sandilands explained the disagreement started when Henderson felt he wasn’t paying attention to her conversation.
Relationships aren’t always easy. She ended things unexpectedly, but he assured everyone the show would continue without any problems.
He then explained why his co-star stormed off and told him she ‘wasn’t coming back’.
He explained that she accused him of being uninterested because he didn’t agree with her point of view.
Besides their popular radio show, it seems like Jackie and Kyle are starting to disagree or have different goals.
For years, Henderson has been working to build her career and recognition independently of her collaboration with Sandilands.
In 2022, she ended her working relationship with her manager of many years, Brad March, and began working with a new agency founded by her friend, Gemma O’Neill.
The two launched a podcast together, Her Best Life – ‘for women who are ready to find their joy’.
They then started a lifestyle and events company called Besties, which quickly gained attention and was built around their close friendship.
A few weeks ago, however, Henderson pulled out of Besties and Her Best Life.
She said a significant change occurred before the decision was made, and hinted she wanted to keep much of her personal life private.
Both Kyle Sandilands and Darren Henderson (known as ‘Henderson’) have worked on television. Henderson was a judge on The Masked Singer until it ended, and Sandilands continues to judge on Australian Idol.
I’ve been following Henderson’s transformation and it’s incredible! She’s lost a huge amount of weight – 20 kilos! – and completely changed her look. Now, she’s really embraced a glamorous, Eastern Suburbs lifestyle and has been seen hanging out with Pip Edwards from P.E Nation, which is so exciting!
Some people think Jackie’s new life and social circle are causing problems in the relationship.
It seems that leaving her popular KIIS breakfast show had been on Henderson’s mind for a while.
Last July, she announced she would retire from performing once her ten-year contract is finished.
She detailed her plans on-air after Sandilands revealed his desire to live in a French chateau.
She said her plan is to move to Italy after ten years and spend six months of each year living there.
After Sandilands asked Henderson if he planned to leave once his ten-year contract finished, Henderson simply answered, “Yes.”
Henderson hinted at her recent disagreement with Sandilands during an October interview with T Australia magazine.
‘Kyle and I have been going head to head a little bit lately, so I will certainly speak up if I don’t agree with what he’s saying,’ she told the publication.
These popular radio personalities first started working together in 2000, hosting the Hot30 Countdown on 2Day FM.
Kyle and Jackie O began their radio show on 2Day FM in 2004, and it ran for ten years. In 2014, they moved their show to KIIS FM.
In 2023, Sandilands and Henderson agreed to a 10-year contract with Australian Radio Network (ARN), with eight years remaining on the deal.
As a huge fan, I remember being blown away when I heard about their deal! They reportedly made around $200 million in that groundbreaking negotiation, which worked out to about $47,000 for each episode they filmed. It was an incredible moment for everyone involved, and honestly, they deserved every penny.
On Tuesday, the Kyle and Jackie O show collapsed.
ARN, the company that owns KIIS FM, announced on Tuesday that Brittany Henderson’s contract, worth $100 million, has been cancelled. This decision came after Henderson informed company leaders she could no longer work with Kyle Sandilands due to his on-air remarks, which had upset her greatly.
Sandilands has been suspended and given 14 days to ‘remedy’ the breach, or else faces termination.
ARN sent Sandilands a written notice explaining that his actions on the February 20th show were a serious violation of the agreement between ARN and Quasar Media.
Okay, so here’s the scoop: the KIIS breakfast show is ending right away. They’re putting some temporary plans in place to cover things until they figure out what’s next. It’s a quick change, but they’re working to keep things running smoothly for listeners.
ARN has offered Henderson the possibility of an alternative show on the network.
