Heartbreak as beloved Kath & Kim legend dies following cancer battle

Kath & Kim director Ted Emery has died after a battle with cancer.

The legendary Australian comedy stalwart passed away at his Noosa home on Tuesday.

A memorial for the television icon will be held in Melbourne in the coming weeks.

Emery began his TV career in the 1970s and quickly built a strong reputation, contributing to several of Australia’s most beloved comedy shows.

He directed popular shows including Fast Forward, Full Frontal, Acropolis Now, Jimeoin, The Eric Bana Show Live, and Tonight Live with Steve Vizard.

He last appeared on screen in the 2022 special, ‘Kath & Kim: Our Effluent Life’, which celebrated the anniversary of the show ‘Kath & Kim’.

Oh my gosh, Kath & Kim! Seriously, I was totally obsessed with that show. It was on ABC and Channel Seven from 2002 to 2007, and the cast was just amazing. Jane Turner, Gina Riley, Magda Szubanski, Glenn Robbins, and Peter Rowsthorn – I mean, they were Kath, Kim, Sharon, Kel and Brett! I still quote it constantly.

The sitcom produced two spin-off movies: Da Kath & Kim Code (2005) and Kath and Kimderella (2012).

The show was famous for its funny appearances by big-name celebrities, like Shane Warne, Kylie Minogue, and Michael Bublé.

I remember back in September 2018, Magda and Jane were discussing bringing it back, but they both agreed it would absolutely need a fresh, modern update to really connect with audiences today. They knew it couldn’t just be a repeat of the past – it had to feel relevant to what’s happening now.

‘Never say never,’ Magda told TV Week.

Jane, who co-created the series with Gina, added: ‘It would be very different now.’

There’s always something new and amusing happening that Kath & Kim could hilariously react to, and it would be great to explore that.

I’m so thrilled to see Kath & Kim back in the spotlight! It’s amazing how many people are rediscovering – or falling in love with for the first time – this hilarious show now that it’s on Netflix. It really deserves all the attention it’s getting!

Magda recently shared news about her health with her fans after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer last May.

The comedian shared a funny video on Instagram explaining she was embracing a new ‘chemo couture’ style after shaving her head in preparation for treatment for her aggressive Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.

In the video, the 64-year-old actress seemed happy and grateful while thanking drag queens Trixie and Katya for enjoying her popular TV show, Kath & Kim.

You guys won’t believe how many of you have been sending me clips of Katya and Trixie watching ‘Kath & Kim’! It’s seriously heartwarming to see them genuinely enjoying the show, laughing right along with us, and connecting with the characters. I’m a little late to seeing it all, but it’s just wonderful!

‘I just wanted to say thank you. I really appreciate your appreciation.’

Magda explained she’s undergoing a treatment called the Nordic protocol for MCL. This treatment uses a combination of drugs, given in five stages, to reduce the size of her tumors.

Szubanski played sports-loving character Sharon Strzelecki in the series.
