After the new character Cole Young wasn’t well-received in the 2021 Mortal Kombat film, the next movie will center on Johnny Cage, a long-time popular character from the Mortal Kombat games. Johnny Cage first appeared in the original Mortal Kombat and quickly became a fan favorite due to his fun personality and backstory as a Hollywood actor. However, something fans love about the character won’t be included in the new film.
The 1995 Mortal Kombat movie first showed Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade as a couple, a storyline the games later picked up, especially starting with the 2011 reboot. However, the new movie focusing on Johnny hasn’t even hinted at a connection between them. While fans might be disappointed by this omission, there’s a good reason to hold off on showing their romance – as explained by Mortal Kombat II’s story.
Mortal Kombat II is Making Major Changes to Johnny Cage
The choice of 53-year-old Joe Urban to play Johnny Cage in a recent Mortal Kombat announcement sparked debate among fans. Traditionally, Johnny Cage has been portrayed as being in his late 20s or early 30s in previous games like Mortal Kombat X, making the age difference a point of contention.
I have to admit, the trailers for this new movie really surprised me. They cleverly explain why they cast an older actor as Johnny Cage. Forget the hotshot hero we know from the games! This version of Johnny is a washed-up celebrity, someone whose peak was definitely in the ’90s. The trailers really drive that home – one line specifically mentions him being ‘out in the ’90s,’ and the other shows him completely ignored at a fan convention. It’s a fascinating twist on the character, and honestly, a pretty smart move.
This change in the character’s life has made him less confident and arrogant than he was in the games. Previously, Johnny would immediately try to flirt with Sonya, assuming his fame and appearance would impress her.
Sonya initially didn’t seem interested in Johnny, as she was a dedicated and serious Special Forces operative focused on her mission. However, as they worked together, a mutual attraction developed. Over time, they balanced each other out – Johnny became more responsible, and Sonya learned to relax and have fun. They eventually married and had a child who first appeared as a fighter in Mortal Kombat X.
Mortal Kombat II Will Lay the Groundwork For Later Films
The current portrayal of Johnny makes it hard to picture him confidently pursuing a romance with Sonya. The new Mortal Kombat II film will therefore center on his personal growth, showing him regain his self-assurance and evolve into the Johnny we know from the games. Trailers suggest a story arc focused on this transformation.
For a long time, Johnny Cage was just used for laughs in the Mortal Kombat games. But the new Mortal Kombat II will give him a more serious and developed backstory right away, helping audiences connect with him as a character. This will make any future romance with Sonya Blade in a Mortal Kombat movie feel much more meaningful.
Sonya stands to gain a lot from this approach as well. The first movie focused on her quest for revenge against Kano and getting a dragon mark, and it would be easy for the sequel to reduce her to simply being Johnny’s love interest. By delaying their romance, the new film can really solidify her importance and independent role in the story.
Okay, so this movie lays a really strong foundation for where things could go with a sequel. It feels like we’re seeing the very beginnings of a relationship that could blossom in a fourth film, and then maybe even jump ahead in time in a fifth to introduce a new character. Honestly, while some fans might want to see things exactly as they are in the games, this change actually works to the movie’s benefit. It’s a smart move for Mortal Kombat II.
