God of War Creator Agrees With Fans on First Look Being ‘So Bad’ & ‘Stupid’

The director who originally created the God of War series has responded to the first official TV show image released online. He called the promotional photo of Kratos and Atreus “terrible” and “silly,” but also explained what he hopes to see from the show overall.

David Jaffe says live-action God of War first look photo is ‘so dumb’ and ‘terrible’

Okay, so I saw the first official image from the God of War TV show on Amazon Prime, and honestly, as a huge fan of the games, I was pretty disappointed. David Jaffe, one of the creators of God of War, basically said the same thing! He called it “so dumb” and “terrible” in a YouTube video, and I get where he’s coming from. It’s just… not a great look. The photo shows Kratos and his son in the woods, but it just feels off, you know?

Jaffe acknowledged everyone was working hard, but he bluntly called a recent image “so dumb.” He explained that something could be both poorly executed and still part of a good overall product. He specifically clarified he wasn’t criticizing the show as a whole, and praised showrunner Ron Moore as incredibly talented. Jaffe expressed full confidence that the show would ultimately be good.

David Jaffe criticized the way Kratos was presented, specifically his expression in a particular pose, calling it “stupid.” He questioned the decision to introduce a new audience to the character with that image, wondering if it was the best first impression for someone meant to carry the series forward.

Jaffe joked that the photo looked like the person was using the woods as a bathroom, and asked if they could find a better one.

On February 27th, Amazon shared the first image from the upcoming series, officially confirming it’s being made. The show will star Christopher Judge reprising his role as Kratos, with Callum Vinson playing his son. Joining them are Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.
