Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell diagnosed with ‘not curable’ cancer

Horror legend Bruce Campbell revealed that he’s battling incurable cancer on Monday.

The actor, 67, who is famous for his role as Ash Williams in the Evil Dead movies, told his fans about his health in a post on X.

Campbell revealed he’s battling a type of cancer that can’t be cured and will be stepping back from fan conventions this year to prioritize his health and treatment.

In a letter to his fans, he explained that he was dealing with a health issue, jokingly calling it an “opportunity,” as is the current trend when people discuss health challenges.

He explained that it’s a cancer that can be managed with treatment, but not completely eliminated. He admitted this news was difficult to hear, saying he was also surprised when he first learned about it.

I won’t be sharing any further details about this. I’m sharing this update because I need to prioritize my treatment, which means stepping back from my public appearances, conventions, and work commitments.

Campbell explained that she’s planning to spend the summer recovering so she can promote her new film, ‘Ernie & Emma,’ this fall.

I unfortunately have to cancel a few appearances this year, and I’m really disappointed about it. Balancing my health needs with work commitments is proving difficult.

So, that covers everything. I’m not looking for pity or suggestions, I just want to share this information now before anything inaccurate starts spreading, because it probably will.

Towards the end of his post Campbell reassured his fans. 

Don’t worry, I’m strong and have a lot of backing, so I plan to stick around for a good long time.

‘As always, you’re the greatest fans in the world and I hope to see you soon!’

Campbell did not specify the details of his diagnosis. 

Fans rallied around the actor with supportive comments.

‘We all love you, Bruce. Get well soon. We know you will,’ one fan wrote. 

‘Take it easy, Bruce. We’ll see you when you’re feeling better.’

‘Praying for you, Bruce, all your fans love you,’ another added.

Let me tell you, Bruce is a force! He’s incredibly resilient and really creates the life he wants. And honestly, he’s got a huge support system – so many people are rooting for him and fighting alongside him. It’s truly inspiring to see.

Campbell started acting in low-budget and student films in the late 1970s. 

He’s most famous for playing Ash Williams, the character who fights monsters with a chainsaw, in the horror film series Evil Dead (1981), directed by Sam Raimi.

He returned to play Ash in Evil Dead II (1987) and Army of Darkness (1992), solidifying his place as a legend in the horror genre.

Working with Sam Raimi has been a major part of his career, highlighted by his appearances in all three of Raimi’s Spider-Man movies.

Campbell recently produced “Evil Dead Burn,” the sixth film in the popular “Evil Dead” series, which is scheduled for release later this year.

He’s also had recurring roles in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess. 

Campbell’s new film, Ernie & Emma, tells the story of Ernie Tyler, a pear salesman who recently lost his wife. He wrote, directed, and stars in the movie, which follows him as he travels to fulfill his wife’s final wish: to have her ashes scattered at several meaningful locations.
