Billie Piper’s Doctor Who future ‘revealed’ as bosses struggle to find a new Time Lord amid claims once coveted role is now a ‘poisoned chalice’

Sources say Billie Piper will definitely be back in Doctor Who, following her surprising reappearance in the show last year.

Although Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor transformed into Piper, the actress who famously played Rose Tyler, she won’t be taking on the role of the Doctor herself. This comes after suggestions that the part has become undesirable.

Oh my god, you won’t BELIEVE this! They’ve basically put my absolute favorite show on hold! It all started when they decided to end their deal with Disney+ – a HUGE mistake, if you ask me – and then, get this, people started complaining about some of the storylines. I mean, they had an alien who identified as non-binary, and one who was, like, an ‘incel’ – honestly, so progressive! – but apparently not everyone gets it. And then, the most amazing plot point EVER – a pregnant alien! A male one! Can you even IMAGINE?! People lost their minds, and now the show’s paused. It’s a tragedy, a complete and utter tragedy! They just didn’t appreciate the genius!

Show bosses are searching for a new Doctor, aiming for a Christmas special in 2026, though filming hasn’t started yet. It’s currently unknown whether Ncuti Gatwa will be involved in that episode or what the show’s plans are beyond it.

Ever since Ncuti Gatwa announced his departure, those in charge have quietly started looking for a new actor to take on the role of The Doctor.

Those in charge are quietly searching for an actor to take on the role of The Doctor. While it used to be a highly sought-after part, it’s now considered a challenging one with potential downsides.

Before speaking with The Sun, I explained that anyone considering the role would need to know if it was just for a holiday special, or if it would continue beyond that. They’d need to understand the long-term commitment to plan their work accordingly.

Daily Mail have contacted BBC for comment.

Disney+ made a huge investment in Doctor Who, reportedly spending around £100 million on the latest two seasons and special episodes.

At the time, Broadcast reported that the cost of making each episode may have risen significantly, potentially from around £1 to £3 million, and in some cases, even up to £10 million.

As a huge fan, I was really touched by what Ncuti Gatwa said after announcing his departure. He explained that you always know eventually you’ll have to say goodbye to the role – that sonic screwdriver has to be returned, and the journey will end. But he admitted that nothing can truly prepare you for actually feeling that it’s over. It really resonated with me, knowing how much he brought to the character.

I’ll never forget this incredible experience, and playing the Doctor will always be a part of who I am. It’s impossible to put into words what it feels like to be chosen for such an iconic role – one that’s been cherished by fans around the world for over 60 years.

Honestly, the fans… you guys are incredible! You’re not just watching the show, you are the show, the very heart of it all. Getting to be a part of the Whoniverse and being accepted by all the Whovians has been the most amazing, heartwarming thing ever. I just can’t thank you all enough!

It’s been an incredible journey, but now it’s time for me to pass on the reins and let someone new experience the joy of this wonderful thing – just as I have.

Honestly, saying goodbye is just… crushing me. I’ll never stop being thankful for this show, and for every single person who helped bring the Doctor to life. They’ve all been a part of my journey, and I’ll cherish that forever.

Piper expressed her excitement about returning to the show, saying she’s always loved it and cherishes her time working on it. She explained that when she was offered the chance to reprise her role and step back into the TARDIS, it was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up.

Some social media users have expressed concern about the show’s cast diversity, the inclusion of a drag queen as a villain, and the introduction of transgender and non-binary characters.

Despite the criticism, both Ncuti Gatwa and show creator Russell T Davies have firmly stated it doesn’t represent the majority view. Davies explained to BBC Radio 2 that concerns about diversity always seem to surface.

We’re facing criticism online, with some people claiming we’re focusing too much on diversity and social issues.

I simply don’t have the patience for this. I’m too busy to deal with it. What others may label as diversity, I see as simply being inclusive and welcoming to everyone.

In a 2024 interview with Attitude magazine, Ncuti Gatwa discussed the negative reactions to the casting of a Black actor in the sci-fi show, calling the intense backlash ‘fascinating.’ He added that those making hateful comments would be better off finding a hobby.

Ncuti Gatwa has been joined by two companions during his time as the Doctor: Varada Sethu, who plays Andor’s character, and Millie Gibson, who portrayed Ruby Sunday, beginning with the 2023 Christmas special, ‘The Church On Ruby Road’.

I’ve been absolutely hooked by his last two series! Some of my favorite moments were definitely the Regency episode – the chemistry with Jonathan Groff, who played Rogue, was amazing! – and the sheer spectacle of ‘Boom.’ Of course, seeing the Rani show up was a huge thrill too – a classic villain done right!
