The official cause of death for Eric Dane has been confirmed.
People magazine reports that actor Angus Cloud, known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, died from respiratory failure, according to his death certificate.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was listed as the underlying cause of death.
Dane died on February 19, 2026. He was 53.
ALS is a disease that progressively damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and eventually causing breathing problems, sometimes resulting in respiratory failure.
The actor became well-known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan—nicknamed ‘McSteamy’—on the TV show Grey’s Anatomy. He also recently gained recognition for his role as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria.
Dane secretly filmed an interview for Netflix several months before he passed away. In it, he shared a heartfelt message specifically for his daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14.
After Dane Cook’s death, Netflix released a new documentary offering viewers a personal look at his thoughts and feelings before he passed away.
Reports indicate that a 50-minute film called “Famous Last Words: Eric Dane” was secretly recorded with the agreement that it would only be released after his death.
At the close of the interview with Brad Falchuk, Gwyneth Paltrow’s husband, Dane spoke directly to his daughters, looking into the camera and saying, ‘Billie and Georgia, this is for you. I did my best, and even when I messed up, I was trying.’
He continued, ‘Overall, we had a blast, didn’t we?’
Dane then shared four important lessons he’d learned while sick, and asked everyone to pay close attention.
‘First, live now, right now in the present. It’s hard, but I learned to do that,’ Dane said.
I used to be a pro at getting lost in my own thoughts – seriously, hours could slip by where I was just stuck replaying the past and beating myself up over things. It was a constant cycle of ‘what ifs’ and regrets – endlessly questioning every decision I’d ever made. But I’ve decided to break that habit. No more dwelling on the ‘should haves’ and ‘could haves’ – I’m choosing to focus on the present and move forward.
Dane said that ‘out of pure survival,’ he was forced to stay in the present.
Dane advised finding something to be passionate about, and even suggested falling in love with a person as a good option. The key, he said, is to simply fall in love with something.
‘Find your passion, your joy. Find the thing that makes you wanna get up in the morning.’
He shared with his daughters that he discovered his passion for acting when he was their age, and encouraged them to wholeheartedly follow their own dreams.
He also stressed the importance of choosing friends carefully. He encouraged people to seek out and connect with those who genuinely support them, and to be there for those friends in return. He explained that true friends offer unconditional support – they won’t judge, make demands, or ask for explanations.
Dane said he was profoundly grateful to the friends who ‘stepped up’ during his illness.
He simply advised people to be present in their lives and cherish their friends. He emphasized the importance of holding onto those friendships, as friends will bring joy, offer guidance, provide support, and even be lifesavers.
He urged everyone to fight with all their strength and maintain their dignity, especially when facing difficulties like health issues. He emphasized the importance of never giving up and continuing to fight until the very end. Although the disease was weakening his body, he declared it would never break his spirit.
Life will inevitably throw unexpected challenges your way. When those moments come, confront them with honesty, strong principles, and composure, even when they seem impossible to overcome.
He finished by saying he hoped he’d shown them they could handle anything life throws their way—even the most difficult challenges. He encouraged them to face everything with courage and pride, his voice filled with emotion.
My dearest Billie and Georgia, you mean the world to me. I love you both very much. Good night, and these are my final words.
Oh my gosh, you guys, in November, Jennifer Gayheart opened up on this podcast called ‘Broad Ideas’ – it was SO moving! She talked about how she and her husband are helping their daughters cope with Dane’s incredibly tough fight against ALS. It was just…heartbreaking and inspiring all at once, honestly. I was completely captivated!
As her father’s health declines, she’s been consistently emphasizing their family’s commitment to supporting others through thick and thin.
‘He is our family. He is your father,’ she told them after Dane revealed his diagnosis in April.
‘We show up, and we try to do it with some dignity and some grace and just get through it.’
Still, she admitted at the time that her relationship with Dane was ‘super complicated.’
She explained that she and her partner have been separated for eight years, and she has full custody of their children.
‘There’s been lots of just stuff, other stuff, but I try to stay optimistic about it all.’
She explained she’s hoping to learn from this difficult experience and set an example for her children on how to cope with challenges.
I’m honestly not sure if I’m handling things correctly. I’m just doing my best to be present and support them, and I suppose we’ll see how it all turns out in the end.
