On March 11, 2026, Prime Video will release Scarpetta, a new crime drama starring Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis. The series is based on the popular novels by Patricia Cornwell and follows Kay Scarpetta (played by Kidman), a brilliant forensic pathologist who solves disturbing crimes using her sharp eye for detail.
Directed by David Gordon Green (known for the 2018 Halloween film) and featuring a strong cast including Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, and Ariana DeBose, the series Scarpetta comes with impressive credentials. It aims to compete with popular Prime Video crime dramas like Jack Ryan and Reacher. With plenty of source material available, Scarpetta, debuting this March, could become a major hit for Prime Video, potentially challenging Bosch as the platform’s leading crime series.
‘Scarpetta’ Is Based on Real-Life Chief Medical Examiner Marcella Farinelli Fierro

Based on Patricia Cornwell’s popular novels, the crime thriller Scarpetta is coming to Prime Video on March 11, 2026. The series, created by Liz Sarnoff (known for Alcatraz), stars Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman as the lead character, Kay Scarpetta. Cornwell has written 29 novels featuring Scarpetta (according to USA Today).
Kay Scarpetta, the protagonist, was inspired by Marcella Farinelli Fierro, who was the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia from 1994 to 2008. Fierro was a pioneer as one of the first women to become a certified forensic pathologist, and she earned a strong reputation for solving crimes using cutting-edge forensic science, as noted by CF Medicine.
Kay Scarpetta, the lead character in a series of 29 novels (and still counting) that began in 1990, will have her story told differently than Prime Video’s Bosch. Unlike Bosch, which adapted one or two books per season, the new series will weave together elements from multiple novels to create a brand new narrative. The trailer shows the story beginning in 1990 and jumping to the present day, with Rosy McEwen portraying a young Kay Scarpetta and Amanda Righetti as a young Dorothy.
As a long-time fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Dr. Scarpetta’s career. She’s really been all over the place! She started as Virginia’s Chief Medical Examiner, then moved down to Florida to teach at the National Forensic Academy and work as a consultant. After that, she did some freelance forensic work in South Carolina, and eventually ended up as a medical examiner in Boston, even though she still keeps a place in New York. It’s quite a resume, and makes for a really interesting backdrop to all the cases she solves.
Nicole Kidman stars as Kay Scarpetta, and Jamie Lee Curtis plays her sister, Dorothy Farinelli, who isn’t always responsible. Ariana DeBose (known from West Side Story) plays Dorothy’s gifted daughter, Lucy Farinelli-Watson. Bobby Cannavale is featured as Pete Moreno, a detective who works closely with Scarpetta, and Simon Baker plays Benton Wesley, a former FBI profiler and Kay’s love interest.
‘Scarpetta’ Is Poised To Surpass ‘Reacher’ and ‘Jack Ryan’ as Prime Video’s Best Procedural

Amazon Prime Video
Featuring an impressive cast of Oscar winners – Nicole Kidman, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ariana DeBose – Scarpetta promises performances that could be as captivating as those seen in Prime Video hits like Reacher and Jack Ryan. While Alan Ritchson and John Krasinski are both talented, Kidman and Curtis bring a level of experience and prestige built over decades in film.
David Gordon Green, known for his strong directing in films like All the Real Girls and George Washington, brings a creative touch to Scarpetta that surpasses most dark and realistic crime shows on Prime Video since Bosch. Charlotte Brändström, the director of Shōgun, is also set to direct episodes.
With so many novels to adapt, Scarpetta has the potential to become as popular and long-running as other successful crime series like Bosch, Reacher, and Jack Ryan. If Nicole Kidman continues to star, it could become Prime Video’s best crime thriller ever.
Prime Video has committed to two seasons of Scarpetta, with eight episodes per season. You’ll be able to watch the entire first season starting March 11, 2026, perfect for watching all at once.
