As a long-time anime fan, I’ve noticed a real shift away from classic fantasy lately. It feels like most new fantasy anime either fall into the ‘isekai’ category – you know, where someone gets transported to another world – or some other kind of reincarnation story. It’s a little strange, honestly, because fantasy is such a popular genre in general! When you add extra twists on top of it, it can feel forced. But honestly, that’s what makes a truly original fantasy anime so special – they’re rare gems, and I absolutely love discovering them when they appear!
Often called DanMachi by its fans, this anime is a fantastic example of modern fantasy. Adapted from a series of light novels by Fujino Omori, DanMachi has consistently delivered quality entertainment for over eleven years across five seasons. While the first season in 2015 didn’t initially generate much buzz, it quickly gained a dedicated fanbase and became a lasting success. Now, a new season is in development, and many are hopeful it will be the strongest one yet, though a release date hasn’t been announced.
I’m a huge fan of DanMachi, and I think a lot of people are too! It’s easy to see why – the action is beautifully animated, and I love how it blends mythology from all sorts of different cultures into this incredible world. But what really hooked me is the main character, Bell Cranel. He starts out as this pretty weak adventurer, just trying to earn a living by exploring the dungeon. I remember one of the first things we see is him getting chased by a minotaur! He was completely cornered and about to be defeated, but then this amazing hero, Aiz Wallenstein, shows up and saves him. It was such a great moment!
Bell’s feelings for Aiz awaken a special power within him in the dungeon, allowing him to level up much faster than other adventurers – the stronger his love, the quicker he grows. After training and gaining strength, he’s able to defeat a minotaur by himself and, with the help of his friends, even defeats a powerful boss monster that controls an entire dungeon floor.
Each season of DanMachi presents new opportunities for Bell to develop and improve. In Season 2, he’s unexpectedly put in charge of leading his team in a large-scale War Game initiated by the Apollo Familia, who attempt to recruit him. Later, he and his group fight the formidable Ishtar Familia to rescue Haruhime, a fox spirit forced into servitude. These experiences compel Bell to become a stronger and more assured leader as the Hestia Familia expands.
In the third season of DanMachi, Bell discovers a hidden secret about the Dungeon: the Xenos. These are monsters who have been reincarnated so many times they’ve developed human-level intelligence. Shunned by both humans and other monsters, the Xenos are the most outcast group in the series. After meeting and befriending a young Xenos girl named Wiene, Bell chooses to support them, even if it means losing popularity among adventurers. While he can’t bring humans and Xenos together, the story demonstrates Bell’s commitment to doing what’s right, even if it means disagreeing with his friends.
The fourth and fifth seasons of DanMachi focus on Bell’s development as a leader. Season 4 throws Bell into the dangerous depths of the dungeon, where he faces incredibly powerful monsters and a nearly invincible foe called the Juggernaut, which has destroyed entire groups of adventurers. Season 5 revolves around Freya trying to manipulate Bell into joining her Familia by altering his memories and making everyone forget his past with Hestia. Throughout both seasons, Bell is mostly on his own and can’t depend on his Familia for support until the very end.
Everything seems to be leading up to Bell becoming the hero prophesied from the start. He’s destined to defeat the Black Dragon, the most powerful foe in Danmachi, and ultimately bring humans and Xenos together. It’s been a gradual process, but all the challenges have been worthwhile.
Season 6 of DanMachi promises to be the strongest yet, taking the story outside the city of Orario for the first time. The new story arc introduces the School District, a massive, traveling ship dedicated to training people in all kinds of skills, like crafting and fighting. When the ship arrives in Orario, the city’s powerful families start competing to recruit the most promising new talents.
Bell finds himself reluctantly assisting a group of students during a school district mission, and unexpectedly crosses paths with an adventurer who knows about the previous attempt to defeat the Black Dragon. After six seasons, viewers will be thrilled to see Bell continue to grow as a hero, and the main storyline finally move forward. This season will also feature a return to the dungeon for fresh adventures – something that was missing in Season 5 of DanMachi.
Each season of DanMachi has consistently featured better animation and more impressive fight scenes. While the first season wasn’t great in these areas, Season 3 delivered standout battles like Bell versus Asterius and Bell and Ryuu against the Juggernaut. The studio, J.C. Staff, has clearly improved with each season, so fans have every reason to expect DanMachi Season 6 will be excellent.
It’s possible the current season will be the last new installment of DanMachi for quite some time. The show had a significant gap between its first season in 2015 and its second in 2019. While DanMachi has released a new season almost every year since then – with the exception of 2021 – the anime is now nearly caught up to the original light novel series, as Season 5 covers volume 18.
The twenty-first volume of the DanMachi light novel came out in October 2025, leaving just three more volumes in the original series. Since the author, Omori, is also writing another novel and a Sword Oratoria spin-off, it’s understandable that new DanMachi volumes are being released less frequently. Fans might have to wait another year for volume twenty-two.
That’s another reason why season 6 of DanMachi could be the best one so far. Previous seasons usually covered three volumes of the original light novel, which some fans felt was rushed. If the new season focuses only on the School District arc – which is two volumes long – it will have more time to develop the story and details that were previously cut, potentially making it the greatest DanMachi season yet.
