The Diplomat is about to get a lot more exciting.
Keri Russell has hinted at future storylines for the Netflix thriller The Diplomat after her unexpected win at the Actor Awards. Russell, who stars in the series, received the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series at the ceremony hosted by SAG-AFTRA. The win comes before the release of season four of The Diplomat, which Netflix confirmed will arrive in May 2025.
At The Actor Awards, Russell discussed what fans can anticipate in season 4 of The Diplomat, especially after the dramatic ending of season 3. She described the show as consistently improving, and highlighted the excellent writing by creator Debora Cahn, also mentioning how much she enjoys being a part of the series. Here’s what Russell shared:
So, what can you tell us about what happens next on The Diplomist, especially after that huge cliffhanger at the end of the last episode?
Keri Russell was completely surprised and thrilled when she won the award. She was so shocked, she hadn’t prepared an acceptance speech because she always expects to lose.
Debora Cahn’s writing is consistently excellent and full of unexpected turns, which makes reading each script a real pleasure. It feels liberating to work on. The next season will continue in that vein – it’s a complex story about a character who is both strong and flawed, intelligent and humorous – everything you’d want in a character! And importantly, even as we head into the fourth season, the quality remains high.
The third season of The Diplomat concluded with a shocking turn: Hal (Rufus Sewell) secretly worked with President Penn (Allison Janney) to recover the Poseidon, despite Kate (Russell) having just shared a plan with Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) to permanently disable it. Hal had actually told Kate to propose this plan, leading her to believe he was supporting her efforts.
After the events of season 3, Hal and Penn seem poised to become Kate’s main obstacles in The Diplomat. While her complicated relationship with her husband has always been central to the show, it’s now reached a critical point, especially since she’s learned the truth, and could lead to serious problems.
In the last scene of season 3, Hal reveals to Penn that she’s aware of his secrets, creating a new dynamic between them. This leaves Kate vulnerable, as she’s lost her main confidante. However, as the larger conspiracy unfolds, Russell’s comment that the show will improve suggests the story is about to become much more complex and impactful, leading to significant developments for Kate moving forward.
Currently, season 4 of The Diplomat is in production. Keri Russell as Penn, Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn, and Nana Mensah as Billie Appiah will all have larger roles this season. The number of episodes and release date on Netflix are still unknown.
Despite the high stakes already, creator Debora Cahn hints that season four of The Diplomat will be even more dramatic. Following Hal’s recent deception, the show is building towards a more intense narrative, leaving Kate with fewer trusted allies as she faces a challenging new political situation.
