What Michael B Jordan’s shock Actor Awards win means for the Oscars

As a movie fan, I’ve been so excited for awards season, and it’s really heating up! Last night, the Actor Awards – you might remember them as the SAG Awards – happened in Hollywood, and it was cool that you could even watch it live on Netflix!

Just like with the Golden Globes and BAFTAs, many people are looking at these awards to guess what might happen at the Oscars, particularly in the biggest categories.

When Michael B. Jordan won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture for his roles as Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, it significantly changed the outlook for the Best Actor Oscar race.

This year’s Actor Awards featured a highly competitive field, with Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio considered the favorites. Ethan Hawke and Jesse Plemons were also strong contenders for the prize.

Jordan hadn’t won any of the previous award shows, but this time feels different – he’s finally a winner!

It’s not just that he finally got a ‘Best Actor’ award, it’s that he won it at this particular awards show. It feels different, you know? Like this win specifically is special.

Since the awards show started (previously called the SAG Awards, but renamed this year), a strong majority – 24 out of 31 – of the Best Actor winners have also won the Oscar for Best Actor.

It’s not a perfect prediction – for example, Adrien Brody unexpectedly won over Timothée Chalamet last year – but a 77.4% success rate is quite impressive.

Jordan was surprised by his victory, admitting he hadn’t anticipated winning. He then expressed gratitude to his mother for supporting him with transportation to early auditions.

The film Sinners received the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast, recognizing the entire ensemble. Jessie Buckley won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her work in Hamnet.

Sinners can be streamed with Cinema subscription on Sky or NOW.

The latest issue of Living Legends, a vibrant 100-page tribute to Taylor Swift, is now available! You can purchase it at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
