Jessie Buckley first gained attention as a contestant on a talent show, and now her recent role in the historical film Hamnet is earning her serious awards buzz.
The 36-year-old actress has won every award she was nominated for this season, including a BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Critics’ Choice Award.
She isĀ now tippedĀ to win an Oscar for Best Actress at the ceremony next month.
Jessie received the award for Best Actress at the 2026 Actor Awards in Los Angeles for her role in the film.
You know, standing up there, I was really moved. I told everyone that I’ve been completely transformed by the incredible people around me ā both those in the room and so many others who’ve touched my life. It’s true ā relationships really do shape who we become!
She said it was a wonderful way to live, getting to work alongside her inspiring and courageous friends, people who were open and honest with her.
Following her win, fans took to X to share their prediction for Jessie at the upcoming Oscars.
As a huge awards season follower, I’m telling you, Jessie Buckley is the one to watch! Everyone seems to agree she’s practically a lock for an Oscar nomination, and honestly, I think she’s going to win. All the other acting categories are still totally up for grabs, though ā it’s anyone’s guess!
Everyone is predicting a major awards season for Jessie Buckley ā many believe an Oscar is almost guaranteed! It’s refreshing that the only thing we know for sure is…
Oh my god, Jessie Buckley is finally going to win that Oscar! I just know it. I’m so unbelievably excited, I can barely breathe! Seriously, that Oscar is hers, absolutely hers. Now, I’m just on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens with the rest of the awards, but honestly, Jessie already winning is enough to make my night!
I was absolutely thrilled to hear the news back in January ā Jessie received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her incredible performance in Hamnet! It’s so well-deserved, and I couldn’t be happier for her.
She’s been nominated again and will be attending the awards ceremony in Los Angeles on March 15th. This follows her previous nomination four years ago for her work in The Lost Daughter.
The category of Actress in a Leading Role is expected to be very competitive, with Jessie facing off against Rose Byrne (for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), and Emma Stone (Bugonia).
Jessie expressed her immense pride and gratitude for being nominated for her performance as Agatha Shakespeare.
She told The Hollywood Reporter she was overjoyed, even with her baby crying in the background. She expressed immense pride and honor to be recognized alongside such talented women, and was especially happy to share the moment with her son, Hamnet.
Hamnet has received eight award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Chloe Zhao. However, many were surprised that Paul Mescal wasn’t nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
Released in January to widespread praise, the movie tells the story of William Shakespeare and the death of his son, Hamnet, and its impact on Agnes Shakespeare.
The film has already won several major awards and is expected to be a frontrunner at the upcoming Oscars.
Jessie has received special recognition for her portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare, the main character, and for beautifully depicting her emotional experience with the life and loss of her son.
The movie delves into how a personal tragedy impacts a family and unexpectedly influences the writing of Shakespeareās famous play, Hamlet.
Andrew Lloyd Webber isn’t surprised by her potential Oscar win ā he recognized her talent when she auditioned against twelve other actors for a part in his West End production.
The Irish actress was only 18 years old when she competed on the 2008 BBC show I’d Do Anything, hoping to win the part of Nancy. She almost got the role, but Jodie Prenger was ultimately chosen.
Although Jodie ultimately won the public vote, Andrew reportedly supported Jessie for the role.
Judge Denise Van Outen shared that Andrew was very disappointed when the contestant didn’t win. He even told her that one of her performances was the best he’d ever heard from someone so young.
‘Iām not at all surprised sheās gone on to do great things.’Ā
Yet while Jessie may not have landed the role, she still went on to achieve career success.Ā
Playing Hamnet has been incredibly impactful for Jessie, both professionally and personally. It not only advanced her career, but also motivated her to embrace her most fulfilling role yet: becoming a mother.
The actress, who generally keeps her personal life private, surprised fans in April by revealing she was expecting a baby at a public event. However, she didn’t make any official announcement when the baby was born.
During interviews about her book, Hamnet, she simply mentioned being a mother.
Jessie unexpectedly became pregnant shortly after finishing a film where she played a mourning mother. She shared that the role sparked a strong desire to have a child of her own.
On The New York Times’ Modern Love podcast, she shared that she became pregnant shortly after finishing filming. She explained this was likely connected to feeling a strong maternal instinctāa deep need to nurtureāeven though she wasn’t yet a mother herself, and the experience was emotionally powerful.
Jessie went on, saying it was often heartbreaking to experience life feeling so different, like she was someone else entirely. She paused, then added, ‘Just be patient…’
‘I think when I was filming Hamnet, I deeply wanted to become a mother myself.
It was a truly valuable experience to witness this woman’s journey through motherhood, love, and loss, especially before I became a mother myself.
Taking control of my pregnancy, from getting pregnant through planning the birth I wanted, was a really empowering experience. I felt strong being able to make my own choices about it.
Jessie announced she was pregnant about a year after marrying her husband, who she had previously kept private and referred to as ‘Freddie’.
She’s been keeping her partner’s identity a secret, but it’s now been revealed they got married a year ago. He’s a mental health professional and lives in Islington, North London.
The couple split their time between London and Norfolk where the actress moved to in 2022.
Jessie is currently prioritizing being a mother, but it will be fascinating to see what she does next, as she’s said becoming a parent has given her a new sense of direction.
Speaking to CBS, she shared: ‘I feel raw after having had a child and in a really refreshing way.
Honestly, it’s like a total awakening. Everything justā¦clicks. All the fake stuff fades away, and you suddenly see what really matters. It’s like I’ve been asleep my whole life and now I’m finally, truly awake and focused. It’s incredible!
When asked how becoming a mother changed her perspective, she explained that it deeply affected her emotionally, saying, ‘It’s a level of vulnerability and openness you can’t understand until you’ve gone through it yourself.’
I used to think showing that much emotion would have been frightening, but now I embrace that raw, human side of motherhood ā the strength and tenderness that comes with loving so deeply.
It’s still unknown what project Jessie will take on after having a baby, but she’ll be back on screen soon!
The actress has a leading role inĀ The Bride!, which is set for release this year.Ā
The new monster movie, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, draws inspiration from the classic 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein. Jessie plays a woman who is brought back to life to be a companion for Frankensteinās monster.
Jessie appears in the film with well-known actors Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal, and PenƩlope Cruz, and Christian Bale plays the monster.
She recently shared how quickly she moved from filming the intense monster movie, The Bride!, to the historical drama Hamnet, with only a two-week break in between.
As a longtime fan, I think the best way to describe the difference between these two works is what the creator herself said: ‘Hamnet’ feels like working with something raw and natural, like clay and earth. But ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’? That’s pure, explosive energy ā it’s like being jolted with electricity while fuel is surging through your veins! It was absolutely breathtaking.
The Bride! is scheduled for worldwide release on March 6.
