Catherine O’Hara leaves Hollywood audience in tears as late star wins posthumous trophy at 2026 Actor Awards

Catherine O’Hara received a moving tribute at the 2026 Actor Awards, where she posthumously won for her work in The Studio. Her co-star, Seth Rogen, accepted the award in her memory, and the ceremony was filled with emotion.

The actor accepted the award for best actress in a comedy series on behalf of the recently deceased star, describing it as a bittersweet moment.

Seth Rogen gave a touching speech honoring Catherine O’Hara, praising her as an actress deeply respected by fellow performers. The audience at the SAG-AFTRA event responded with a standing ovation.

It truly meant the world to me to see her recognized like that. Knowing she looked up to all those performers, to receive an award from them… it was just incredibly moving. I could see it in her face – she was completely overwhelmed, and honestly, so was I. Seeing her tearful reaction, it just showed how much this meant to her, and how much she respected her peers.

The heartfelt moment continued, with many in the audience, including Jenna Ortega – a co-star in Beetlejuice and fellow nominee – wiping away tears during the speech.

Eleanor O’Hara, a talented actress who died in late January at age 71 from complications related to rectal cancer, gave a wonderful final performance in The Studio. She played the character Patty Leigh with her usual humor and grace.

Rogen shared that he’s been thinking a lot about his time with her and how amazing it was to work with her. He was particularly struck by her ability to be incredibly kind and generous while also confidently recognizing and contributing her own unique talents to their projects.

‘She knew she could destroy, and she wanted to destroy every day on set.’

He marveled at O’Hara’s control over her craft, revealing how she meticulously reshaped her scenes.

I haven’t mentioned this to the other actors, but almost every night before filming, she’d email both me and Evan Goldberg a revised version of her scenes. The email always started with, “Hello, I hope you’ll consider the following.”

Rogen explained that every single time she contributed, it improved not only her character, but also the scene and the show overall.

She proved that brilliance and kindness can absolutely coexist – you don’t have to sacrifice one to have the other.

After the heartfelt tribute, he encouraged everyone to share O’Hara’s work with those who weren’t yet familiar with it.

Let me leave you with this thought. If you know anyone unfamiliar with Catherine O’Hara’s work – maybe children, or people who just haven’t discovered her yet – show them clips of her dancing in videos with Harry Belafonte and Beetlejuice, or her hilarious injured knee scene from Best in Show. As they’re laughing, tell them that’s Catherine O’Hara, and how fortunate we all were to experience her incredible talent.

O’Hara was the first member of the Screen Actors Guild to receive an individual award after her death, marking a historic moment.

I was so thrilled to see her recognized as part of The Studio’s ensemble – she’s incredibly talented! And it wasn’t a surprise at all when she also won for her work on the final season of Schitt’s Creek; that show was amazing, and she was a huge part of its success.

The Studio received five nominations for the Actor Awards and won three, including the award for Best Ensemble Performance in a Comedy Series.

Earlier in the evening, Rogen also scored the award for Best Actor for his role in the comedy.

Rogen had already paid tribute to O’Hara back in January on Instagram.

The star called it a ‘true honour’ to have worked with her.

He added, ‘This is just devastating. We’re all lucky we got to live in a world with her in it.’

Fellow cast members shared their own heartfelt memories.

Chase Sui Wonders remembered O’Hara as a truly kind and radiant person, and Maya Hahn said she was constantly inspired by her as both an artist and a person.

Ike Barinholtz shared similar feelings, saying he was deeply saddened by her passing but also very thankful for the time they had together.
