Knowing that HBO had renewed Industry for a fifth and final season, we expected eight more episodes following Harper Stern and Yasmin Kara-Hanani as they navigate their careers and complex relationship. However, the season finale left us wondering about Yasmin’s future, as she now seems to be becoming someone who supports and enables the actions of very powerful and wealthy men, much like Ghislaine Maxwell.
After her marriage to wealthy Henry Muck and her business deal with the dishonest company Tender both fell apart, Yasmin is left trying to rebuild her life and figure out her next move. The finale reveals her secret to climbing the social ladder: she’s been arranging for young women to connect with – and be exploited by – a series of questionable guests at exclusive dinner parties, and secretly recording those encounters. Even though Harper strongly objects to Yasmin associating with Nazis and taking advantage of young girls, Yasmin believes this is now her true purpose.
“You once told me, ‘The world is showing you what it is,’” she reminded Harper. “You process difficult emotions and grow as a person. I feel like I matter here, like I’m needed. I feel like a fresh start, and I’m hurting less. That’s all I need.”
The final scene of the show was deeply disturbing, largely because it strongly resembled the well-publicized case of Jeffrey Epstein and his accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell was convicted in 2021 of helping Epstein traffic and abuse young girls, using her social standing to find and groom victims. Given what happened in the season finale, it seems likely that the character Yasmin will soon face similar consequences for her actions.

Similarities between Yasmin and Maxwell have been noted throughout Season 3 of the show, especially regarding the deaths of their fathers. Both Charles Hanani, Yasmin’s father, and Robert Maxwell, Maxwell’s father, died after falling from their respective yachts – the Lady Yasmin and the Lady Ghislaine. While the show depicts Yasmin witnessing her father’s death, the circumstances surrounding Robert Maxwell’s death also sparked rumors and conspiracy theories. The parallels between these events have become a key focus of the series.
The parallels continue. Like Ghislaine Maxwell, Yasmin experiences a rapid downfall after the unexpected death of Charles and the revelation that he was a fraud who stole millions. This is shown in the show Industry through Yasmin’s increasingly ruthless and controlling actions as she tries to protect her career. Similarly, Ghislaine met Epstein shortly after her father, Robert Maxwell, died and their family’s name and wealth were ruined.
The final episode of Season 4 shows Yasmin still deeply controlled by her abusive father, both physically, sexually, and emotionally. After confronting Harper, she spends the morning replaying a voicemail from Charles, an invitation to the yacht trip where he would later die. Before Maxwell’s sentencing in 2022, Yasmin’s lawyers explained that the severe abuse she suffered as a child left her vulnerable to exploitation by Epstein.
When asked about similarities between her character Yasmin and Ghislaine Maxwell, actress Naomi Abela confirmed that Yasmin was at least “loosely inspired” by Maxwell. She pointed to parallels like Yasmin’s father being a wealthy publisher who died on a yacht named Lady Yasmin. Abela explained that Yasmin is a woman who has always felt insecure and powerless, and suddenly finds herself close to powerful people. The show explores how this affects her – whether she’s corrupted by the power, or succumbs to it. That was the main comparison they were drawing.
Abela explained that she intentionally kept the connection between the characters Yasmin and Maxwell somewhat distant. She noted that the story’s events were developing concurrently with filming, and given how upsetting and genuine the subject matter now feels, she’s relieved she didn’t make their connection too strong.
It’s possible Maxwell’s 20-year prison sentence offers a clue about Yasmin’s future in Season 5, although his downfall didn’t happen for many years after her actions. Or maybe it’s a red herring. Regardless, the Season 4 finale strongly suggests there’s no going back for Yasmin, who now calls herself Miss Hanani.
