A new show created by Taylor Sheridan is coming out soon, and it looks like it will use a familiar technique to deeply affect viewers. Starring Michelle Pfeiffer, the Montana-based series, The Madison, begins March 14th, and the first episode could have major consequences for her character.
Described as a touching exploration of loss and relationships, The Madison centers on Stacy Clyburn, played by Connie Pfeiffer, a woman who moves to Montana’s Madison River Valley after a terrible tragedy. Kurt Russell appears as Stacy’s husband, Preston, but hints suggest his character may not be around for long. In fact, Russell’s impactful performance could be revealed right in the very first episode.
Taylor Sheridan’s Daunting Bait-and-Switch Tactic Explained
Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, might be using a familiar trick in his new series. He often introduces a character early on who seems like the main protagonist, only to have them killed off in the very first episode. Based on clues in the story and this established pattern, his latest show could follow the same formula – leading viewers to believe one character is central when another is actually the focus.
This technique was used in Yellowstone. The series centers around John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, and his grown children. John’s eldest son, Lee Dutton (Dave Annable), is initially presented as a key character. However, he is unexpectedly killed off early in the first episode, shocking viewers because of how important he seemed.
In the first episode of his Paramount+ series Landman, starring Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris, Sheridan uses a surprising and impactful plot twist. The character Armando, played by Alex Peña, is initially presented as a key figure. However, the pilot ends with his unexpected death, immediately establishing the show’s dark and unpredictable nature.
Given that The Madison will explore a deeply personal story about loss, it’s likely Taylor Sheridan will begin with a tragic event, mirroring the style of his other realistic shows. However, some specific details will offer clues about where the story is headed, as this is reportedly Sheridan’s most emotionally focused project yet.
Signs Kurt Russell’s Character Dies In The Madison’s Pilot
Early reports about David E. Kelley’s Montana series revealed that Stacy relocated to Montana following a plane crash that took the lives of her husband and brother-in-law (according to TV Line). With the recent release of the official Paramount+ trailer and other confirmations that Josh Lucas will portray Stacy’s husband, it’s now very likely that his character’s death is the pivotal event shaping the story.
The scene depicts Russell happily running around a private jet, which is then shown flying over Montana. Importantly, the show is now delivering on the elements that were originally planned, creating the circumstances for Preston’s heartbreaking death. The main question remaining is exactly when the series will show the pivotal event that drives the story’s emotional impact.
Given her husband’s death is a central element, and the trailer depicts Stacy dealing with intense grief, it’s possible Preston dies in the very first episode. This would be consistent with creator Taylor Sheridan’s pattern of unexpectedly eliminating characters, even those prominently featured in promotional materials, potentially despite a lot of advertising around the actor’s role.
IMDb recently updated information about Russell’s appearances, indicating he’ll be in all six episodes of the first season. He might die early on and appear in flashbacks later, or his character could die towards the end of the season.
It’s possible that The Madison will reveal Preston’s death near the end of the first season. This would be a similar approach to what Taylor Sheridan has done before – for example, he didn’t kill off Jon Hamm’s character, Monty Miller, until late in the first season, which then drove the intense plot of Season 2.
Early reports indicate that Stacy’s husband and brother-in-law were killed in a plane crash. The actor who plays Preston also plays Paul Clyburn, Stacy’s brother-in-law. Currently, on IMDb, the actor is only listed in the first episode of The Madison, which suggests that both Paul and Preston might die in that episode and that the actor may appear later in flashbacks.
