In 1983, actress Gina Gershon had a memorable meeting with Prince as he looked for an actress to star opposite him in the movie Purple Rain.
According to Page Six, a musician friend told the 62-year-old actress, known for her role in ‘Showgirls,’ that Prince wants to meet her. He’s working on a film and needs a leading lady who can sing, dance, and act, and the friend mentioned her as a possibility.
Gershon was still a student at New York University, working towards degrees in drama and psychology/philosophy, but she was thrilled to travel to Minnesota. There, Prince picked her up in a limousine.
‘I think I’m going to call you “Ghee-na,”‘ Prince said with a hard G sound.
‘Ghee-na?’ Gershon scoffed. ‘As in Ghee-na Gershon?’
‘No,’ the seven-time Grammy winner corrected. ‘Just Ghee-na.’
The actress known for ‘The Assassin’ didn’t want to be one of Prince’s famous collaborators and inspirations, like Sheila E., Wendy & Lisa, Mayte Garcia, Carmen Electra, Sheena Easton, and Jill Jones.
‘I don’t want to be called “Ghee-na” for the rest of my life,’ Gershon said.
It wasn’t just a look; it felt deeply unsettling. He looked at me in a way I’d never experienced before, almost like he was fundamentally changing how I felt within myself, and it made me very uncomfortable.
The New Yorker, originally from Los Angeles, revealed in her upcoming memoir, AlphaP (available this Tuesday), that she often wished she had collaborated with Prince.
Gershon said he’d have given anything to collaborate with that incredibly talented musician, but he disliked being told what to do.
‘For better or for worse, I listened to my instincts.’
After Jennifer Beals decided not to take the role, Apollonia Kotero ended up playing The Kid’s girlfriend in Albert Magnoli’s famous rock musical film. The movie was a big success, earning $70.3 million and winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
In 2016, the world lost Prince to an accidental overdose of fentanyl. He was 57 years old and had sold more than 120 million records throughout his career.
The actress, known for her role in High Rollers, first appeared in a movie as a typical antagonist in the 1986 teen romance Pretty in Pink, starring alongside Molly Ringwald. This success opened doors to bigger parts, including a role opposite Tom Cruise in Cocktail.
Gershon’s new 288-page book includes praise from well-known figures like Miley Cyrus, Aubrey Plaza, and James Frey.
The actress, known for her role in Doom: The Dark Ages, explained that her work is a compilation of personal experiences dealing with challenging people and harmful environments, while also staying true to herself.
It’s actually quite freeing. There are many negative people who try to control others and dictate their thoughts.
Gershon will be signing copies of her book this Tuesday at Cooper Union in Manhattan, following a question-and-answer session led by Saturday Night Live’s Bowen Yang.
‘I’m in love with him,’ the SNL guest star noted. ‘I just adore him. He’s a wonderful guy.’
Author Rebecca Gershon, known for books like Camp Creepy Time and In Search of Cleo, also had a four-decade acting career, appearing in films such as Bound, The Insider, Face/Off, and The Player.
