A24’s Glen Powell Thriller Based On 77-Year-Old Classic Has Significant Week 2 Slump Despite Adding More Theaters

How to Make a Killing is dying in theaters.

A24’s new thriller, How to Make a Killing, stars Glen Powell as a man who systematically eliminates his wealthy, distant relatives to claim their inheritance. It’s a modern take on the 1949 film Kind Hearts and Coronets. The movie opened at No. 6 on the weekend of February 20th, earning an average of $2,146 per theater – a surprisingly low number for an A24 release.

I’m really disappointed to see that How to Make a Killing is expected to make around $1.56 million this weekend. According to Deadline, that means it’s dropped a huge 55% from last week, which is a pretty significant slump. I was hoping it would perform better!

Although the movie’s second-week decline isn’t completely surprising for a film that isn’t doing well, the numbers are still quite low, especially since it’s now showing in more locations – 1,726 theaters, up 101 from its opening weekend.

The movie How to Make a Killing isn’t performing as well at the box office. While its initial per-screen average of $2,146 was already low for A24, it has now dropped significantly to just $904, due to lower overall ticket sales across a wider number of theaters.

The film How to Make a Killing hasn’t been widely released internationally, meaning its success relies heavily on how well it does in the US. While it’s expected to earn around $6.2 million domestically by the end of the weekend, that’s still far short of its $15 million budget. Experts estimate the movie needs to earn around $37.5 million overall to cover its costs and become profitable.

The movie has been met with significant disappointment. Reviews for How to Make a Killing are mixed, resulting in a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This makes it one of Glen Powell’s lowest-rated films, surpassed only by The Expendables 3 (32%), Ride Along 2 (15%), and Misconduct from 2016 (7%).

Glen Powell’s latest A24 thriller appears to be heading for a disappointing performance in theaters, potentially marking his second consecutive box office failure after Baby Driver, which struggled to earn back its significant $110 million budget, only grossing $68.6 million. Despite this, there’s still a chance for the actor, known for hits like Anyone But You and the upcoming Twisters, to turn things around.

After starring in the hit movie How to Make a Killing, Glen Powell has several exciting new films coming up. These include The Great Beyond with Jenna Ortega, directed by J.J. Abrams, The Natural Order directed by Barry Jenkins, and upcoming projects with Judd Apatow and Ron Howard.
