James Gunn Confirms Man Of Tomorrow Won’t Adapt Panic In The Sky

James Gunn, head of DC Studios, has dismissed a fan theory about Brainiac being the villain in the upcoming ‘Man of Tomorrow’ sequel. Brainiac is a well-known and important villain from Superman and DC Comics, but he hasn’t yet been featured in a live-action film.

Good news for DC fans: James Gunn has confirmed that Brainiac will be the main villain in the 2027 film, Man of Tomorrow. Now, everyone’s wondering what the story will be. It could follow Brainiac’s classic scheme of collecting planets, or it could take a surprising turn where he isn’t even the biggest threat Superman faces.

James Gunn shares a lot about his upcoming projects online, more so than many other directors. However, it’s still hard to know exactly what he’s planning based on what he posts. Despite this, Gunn frequently and plainly dismisses fan guesses and speculations.

James Gunn Confirms Man Of Tomorrow Won’t Be A Panic In The Sky Adaptation

Brainiac’s DCU Debut Won’t Be A Single Comic Adaptation

I was scrolling through Threads, looking at posts about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and someone asked James Gunn if the Panic in the Sky comic would inspire Brainiac’s first appearance in the new DCU with Man of Tomorrow. Gunn replied that Brainiac is being built from all sorts of different Brainiac stories – basically, they’re taking bits and pieces from everywhere! – but Panic in the Sky won’t be the main influence on the Man of Tomorrow plot. It sounds like they’re doing something similar with the upcoming Superman movie in 2025, pulling inspiration from all over the character’s history.

In the 1992 DC Comics event, Panic in the Sky, the villain Brainiac attacks Earth. He brings his mobile war-world to Superman’s doorstep, along with allies like the alien princess Maxima and the warrior Draggar, and a disguised impostor pretending to be Supergirl named Matrix. Overwhelmed, Superman calls on the Justice League and the New Gods for assistance.

The Coluan villain Brainiac is usually portrayed as a genius, but using the story Panic in the Sky in a future Superman movie would show him actively leading the invasion instead of just planning it. While this could establish Brainiac as a truly dangerous villain and allow for the introduction of other DC heroes, the Panic in the Sky storyline is too ambitious for a single Superman film. The previous DC movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, already made this error by introducing the entire Justice League and elements of the Death of Superman story too early in Superman’s film series.

Panic In The Sky Is Better Suited For A Justice League Movie

Brainiac’s Invasion Deserves A Proper Justice League Crossover

To feel fresh compared to typical alien invasion stories, a retelling of Panic in the Sky could emphasize just how massive the conflict is. While Superman once saved Metropolis with a small group of heroes, an invasion led by Brainiac would be so huge that it would require all of Earth’s super-powered individuals working together. This adaptation wouldn’t just be a team-up—it would be a large-scale crossover event, dwarfing the threats seen in stories like those featuring the Chitauri and Parademons.

Bringing the New Gods into a Justice League movie modeled after the Panic in the Sky storyline would be a great way to build out the DC universe. It would avoid making them seem like just one big, evil force and prevent Apokolips from overshadowing everything else. Instead of simply being build-up to a final villain, the New Gods could be shown as a complex, advanced civilization with their own goals. Adapting the full scope of the 1992 Panic in the Sky crossover might even require a two-part movie.

What do you think will be Brainiac’s plan in Man of Tomorrow?
