Sammy Hagar feels forgotten as new Van Halen album moves closer to completion

Alex Van Halen is compiling an album of previously unreleased music created from jam sessions with his brother, the late Eddie Van Halen, at their home studio, 5150. While the songs aren’t newly recorded, they will be fresh to audiences. It doesn’t seem like Sammy Hagar will be part of this project.

He isn’t actively involved in reworking or changing his old songs, though some of his past material may be included in the project. Details are scarce, and it’s uncertain if it will ever come out. What’s obvious is that Sammy Hagar and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony feel excluded – and understandably so, as they are.

Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony recently discussed the possibility of new Van Halen music on the Rock of Nations podcast. Both expressed willingness to contribute to help Alex Van Halen complete an album, but neither has been contacted about it, and it doesn’t seem likely they will be – particularly Hagar.

Sammy Hagar appears left out of new Van Halen project

The singer and drummer disagreed strongly after the band’s 2004 reunion tour didn’t go well. Van Halen had never relied on having one consistent singer throughout their career. Alex and Eddie Van Halen believed they were the core of the band’s musical success and viewed singers as interchangeable. Their approach proved valid, as they worked with multiple vocalists over the years.

During an interview on Rock of Nations, Sammy Hagar discussed the possibility of a Van Halen project led by Alex Van Halen. Hagar mentioned that Alex has plenty of material to choose from and could include him and Michael Anthony if he wanted to. However, he acknowledged that it’s ultimately Alex’s decision. Hagar expressed disappointment at not being considered, saying he and Anthony are still capable musicians and surprised they weren’t asked to participate. He questioned the decision, wondering if it was really a Van Halen project without both of them.

The problem is whether this new music would be considered a true Van Halen album. Based on what we know, it would be, as it includes Alex Van Halen, the late Eddie Van Halen, and his son, Wolfgang Van Halen – who currently performs with the band Mammoth.

Wolfgang could handle the vocals if Alex needed someone to sing on the songs. Actually, the project might be really compelling if it primarily used recordings Eddie Van Halen made before his death in 2020, with Alex on drums and Wolfgang playing all the other instruments.

It’s unclear if the unreleased album will ever come out, but fans are hoping for a polished, official release rather than low-quality bootlegs. While new songs would be welcome, it’s unlikely Sammy Hagar will be involved.
