For Bowser Jr.’s team in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Tatanga is a surprisingly fitting choice – a villain the Mario franchise hasn’t used in over three decades. It appears the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel will bring together many of Mario and Luigi’s classic enemies for a new cinematic battle.
The game will feature a variety of enemies, including Bowser, his son, and Kamek. Marketing materials suggest Birdo, traditionally a villain, will fight Princess Peach. Several other familiar boss characters like Mouser, Clawgrip, and Megaleg will also appear, showing the developers are including both well-known and more obscure characters.
With the game increasingly drawing on a wide range of Mario’s classic enemies, it’s possible we might finally see the return of Tatanga, a villain who hasn’t appeared in a while.
Tatanga In Super Mario Land Explained
Though Bowser Jr. is a well-known Mario villain, Tatanga from the original Super Mario Land might actually be a better match for the game’s themes. Introduced in the 1989 Game Boy title, Tatanga is a purple alien who invades Sarasaland and kidnaps Princess Daisy.
Tatanga reappeared in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. Released in 1992, the game explained that Mario’s previous fight with Tatanga in Sarasaland allowed Wario to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. To defeat Wario, Mario travels through a space-themed world and finally gets another chance to battle Tatanga.
Tatanga is permanently defeated in Super Mario Land 2. Although he’s been mentioned in later games, he hasn’t actually appeared as a playable character or main villain since.
Tatanga Would Be An Ideal Choice For A Side Villain In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Given that the new Super Mario Galaxy Movie takes place in space, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the character Tatanga make an appearance. He’s naturally at home in outer space, and the film could easily include him – perhaps even piloting his spaceship, which he’s known for in the Super Mario Land games.
Bowser Jr. could also be a sidekick or helper to Bowser. The Super Mario Galaxy games featured several large robot bosses, and one of them, Megaleg, is confirmed to be in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The movie hasn’t revealed who will be controlling Megaleg, but it could be Bowser Jr.
If the movie features multiple robots, each one might need its own pilot, especially if they’re separated. This could create an opportunity for the villain Tatanga to return and finally battle Mario after 34 years.
