Bridgerton features a large and diverse group of characters, and keeping track of everyone’s storylines—beyond the main love story—requires a lot of attention.
Now that the fourth season of the Netflix period drama has finished – wrapping up the love story of Sophie and Benedict – the show will likely focus on other characters in future seasons.
The show revolves around a big family, so characters frequently join and leave the story. However, the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) hasn’t appeared since season one, and Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) since season two, which has led some viewers to wonder if the actors might be replaced.

However, the show won’t be bringing in new actors to play those roles. According to showrunner Jess Brownell, who spoke with Variety, they believe recasting would diminish the strong foundation Regé and Phoebe built in the first season and wouldn’t honor the effort they put into creating those characters.
We’d be happy to work with them again in the future, but we want to make sure we have a substantial project for them when we do.
Having someone briefly appear at a funeral just to confirm their attendance wouldn’t be appropriate for several reasons.
I don’t believe the camera fully shows what’s happening, even though theoretically it should. It’s just the nature of television. We’d really like to get everyone together again sometime down the road.
Even though Brownell explained the decision, many fans were confused about why they weren’t shown on screen. One fan expressed their frustration on X, wondering why it wouldn’t be normal for family members to support each other on a show about family.
One viewer pointed out that it wasn’t simply a matter of good or bad choices, but that it felt deeply wrong for Daphne to miss such important family events like her siblings’ weddings and the funerals of their partners, especially considering how much she valued family.
It’s still uncertain whether Phoebe Dynevor and Regé-Jean Page will return for future seasons, even though Netflix has already approved seasons five and six of the incredibly popular show.
