If you enjoyed the mind-bending suspense of Severance and are looking for something similar to watch while you wait for its return, check out . It was created by M. Night Shyamalan and also featured the Duffer Brothers, who are known for Stranger Things, as co-executive producers.
The TV series Wayward Pines is adapted from Blake Crouch’s Pines novels. It’s known for its detailed and fascinating backstory, and its overall style feels similar to The Twilight Zone. The pilot episode, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, really captures that Twilight Zone feeling, and is enjoyable even if you don’t continue watching the rest of the show.
Wayward Pines Doesn’t Hold Back on the Psychological Terror
Ethan Burke, the main character in Wayward Pines, is a Secret Service agent with a troubled past, brought to life by Matt Dillon’s strong performance. He’s dealing with the disappearance of his former lover, Kate Hewson (played by Carla Gugino), and a complicated marriage with his wife, Teresa Burke (Shannyn Sossamon). The show features realistic and well-developed relationships, where each character’s choices are motivated by their difficult histories.
Ethan Burke finds himself in a hospital that feels like it’s from the 1950s, cared for by a strangely quirky nurse, brilliantly portrayed by Melissa Leo. He’s informed he was brought in after a serious car crash. Once discharged, he attempts to reach his wife and return home, but he’s inexplicably unable to find his way.
Ethan encounters characters who feel like archetypes – the sheriff, the mayor, the schoolteacher, and the nurse – almost as if they’ve stepped out of a board game. The best way to experience Wayward Pines is to go in knowing as little as possible, allowing you to share the protagonist’s confusion and unravel the show’s unsettling mysteries alongside him.
The first episode sets a gripping tone, and things only get more surprising from there. It’s fascinating to watch the story unfold in unexpected ways, constantly expanding the world and its rules. Though the show occasionally veers into over-the-top territory, it balances this with complex characters, shocking revelations, and genuinely heartbreaking twists.
Wayward Pines Was Canceled After the Second Season
The show Wayward Pines was initially planned as a limited series, but it was renewed for a second season due to the popularity of the first. Unfortunately, a third season doesn’t seem likely. It’s possible the show’s creators moved away from the original book and introduced too many new characters that viewers didn’t connect with, leading to the decision to end it after two seasons.
The first season of Wayward Pines was well-received, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the second season saw a significant drop in approval, with a score of only 43%. When asked about the show’s cancellation in 2017, a Fox executive avoided a direct answer, but also offered no indication that it would continue.
We’ve been in early conversations with M. Night Shyamalan about a potential third season. He’s spoken with both me and Dana Walden at Fox about ideas for the story, casting, and what it could look like. We haven’t made any decisions yet, but we’re planning to discuss his vision in more detail.
I was really disappointed to learn back in 2019 that Fox and M. Night Shyamalan decided not to move forward with a third season of the show. Apparently, someone on the inside said a return is pretty unlikely. Even though there are only two seasons, I still think it’s a great series and worth checking out if you’re looking for something new to watch.
