As a huge fan of the post-apocalyptic genre, I’ve noticed the really good TV shows always bring something fresh to the table. Whether it’s a zombie outbreak, a devastating virus, or some other crazy event, the best ones nail the balance between compelling characters, genuinely scary threats, and these incredibly bleak, but beautiful, worlds. From massive hits like The Last of Us to shows that deserve way more attention, like Sweet Tooth, here’s what I think are the top post-apocalyptic series out there right now.
Fallout’s Post-Apocalyptic Video Game World Is Perfect for TV
Fallout, already gaining recognition, takes place in a future where a nuclear war has destroyed the world. The few people who survived took shelter in underground bunkers called Vaults. When hidden truths about the surface world are revealed, a group of unexpected heroes gets ready for a new conflict. While the situation is grim for humanity, Fallout isn’t a downbeat show. It offers plenty of entertainment with its unique blend of dark and quirky humor.
Fallout has everything you’d want in a post-apocalyptic world: dangerous creatures, mutants, robots, and humans battling for survival. Based on strong source material, and with its high production quality, the series delivers incredible detail and a richly developed world.
After two exciting seasons, this show continues to captivate audiences with its thrilling plot and suspenseful moments. Featuring a talented cast including Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Kyle MacLachlan, viewers are eagerly anticipating the upcoming third season.
Sweet Tooth Searches for Hope in a Devastated World
Unlike many post-apocalyptic stories, Sweet Tooth focuses on hope amidst destruction. Following a global pandemic, a wave of human-animal hybrid children emerge, and are unfairly blamed for the disaster. The series centers on one of these children, who spreads joy as he navigates a broken world alongside others like him, all while trying to survive.
Sweet Tooth is a surprisingly heartwarming TV show set after the apocalypse, appealing to viewers of all ages. Unlike many shows in the genre, it focuses on characters simply trying to find a place to live and build a life, not just struggle to stay alive. The series recently concluded with its third season, featuring a talented cast including Nonso Anozie, Christian Convery, Adeel Akhtar, Stefania LaVie Owen, Dania Ramirez, Aliza Vellani, Will Forte, and Neil Sandilands.
The Walking Dead Has Become a Sprawling Zombie Franchise

The show featured incredibly realistic and frightening creature effects, particularly with the Clickers and other infected, and included several deeply moving scenes that often brought audiences to tears.
The show also features wonderful performances from guest stars like Melanie Lynskey, Nick Offerman, Kaitlyn Dever, Nina Torv, and Murray Bartlett, among others. While fans will have to wait for season three, the popularity of The Last of Us suggests a bright future for shows and movies based on video games.
Station Eleven Balances Horrifying Circumstances With Powerful Performances
Emily St. John Mandel’s popular science fiction novel has been successfully adapted into a TV series. The HBO Max miniseries starts with a devastating flu pandemic that drastically reduces the world’s population. It tells two intertwined stories: one focused on people sheltering in place during the crisis, and another following a group of traveling performers who try to bring joy to a broken world. The series explores how each character copes with the widespread trauma in a personal and individual way.
Station Eleven is a stunning show set after a global catastrophe. It expertly combines a bleak situation with well-developed characters and fantastic acting, particularly from Mackenzie Davis and Himesh Patel. Many were hesitant to start watching when it first aired, as it coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, those who did were deeply moved by the series, and its themes continue to resonate as the world recovers.
