In The Fly, a quirky scientist named Brundle (played by Jeff Goldblum) tries to demonstrate his groundbreaking teleportation device to a journalist, Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis). The Fly Is Horror, and Horror Is The Fly

Following a failed teleportation experiment that horribly injured a baboon, Brundle’s relationship with Veronica Quaife motivates him to fix the technology. He succeeds, but when he tries to teleport himself, a fly gets into the machine, merging his DNA with the insect’s. This triggers a shockingly gruesome, yet remarkably well-executed (especially for 1986, without the use of computer-generated imagery) transformation.

After Brundle’s horrifying change is finished, he’s become a monstrous human-fly creature who can’t speak and is repulsive to see, and to make things worse, he’s constantly vomiting a corrosive substance.

Despite all the horror unfolding, Brundle is desperately trying to fuse himself with Quaife and their baby, but his attempt is violently stopped by a shotgun. Surprisingly, even after everything, the audience still feels a sense of pity for the creature he becomes, Brundlefly.

Davis described working with David Cronenberg and Jeff Goldblum on the set of The Fly as an incredible experience. She told GoldDerby in 2025 that they were completely immersed in the film, dedicating all their time to working on it, discussing it, and rehearsing. She added that she quickly became accustomed to the unusual and often strange aspects of the production.

Jeff Goldblum Open to Making The Fly 2?

The film opened at number one in theaters in 1986 and quickly became a huge hit. Made for just $9 million, it earned over $60.6 million, with a strong opening week of $10.9 million signaling its success. For the past 50 years, both critics and audiences have consistently praised it.

The movie The Fly received very positive reviews, earning a 94% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating from critics and an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 50,000 reviews. Jeff Goldblum has expressed interest in making a sequel decades later and even has a concept in mind.

So, I was just thinking about a potential return to ‘The Fly,’ and honestly, my character’s probably out – you know, what with the whole tragic fly-mutation-machine situation. But I’ve been brainstorming! Maybe I could play a descendant of Seth Brundle – a grandchild, perhaps? Or even a long-lost brother! Something along those lines. It’s all speculation, of course. But working with David Cronenberg was a real highlight, and if he ever decided to revisit that world, I’d jump at the chance to collaborate with him again. He’s a fantastic director.

It remains to be seen if that will happen, but it’s widely accepted that The Fly is one of the greatest horror films ever made, and with good reason. No matter when someone first sees it, the film consistently makes a strong impact.
