Warner Bros. has now shared the full second trailer for its upcoming Mortal Kombat II movie, which will finally arrive in theaters on May 8th – much later than originally planned. This delay means the film will now be released around the same time as Paramount Pictures’ new Street Fighter movie. Though adaptations of video games have become increasingly popular, a truly excellent live-action fighting game movie hasn’t yet been made, and both of these films are hoping to break that mold.
The new trailer for Mortal Kombat II has excited fans because it appears to fix the biggest issues with the 2021 movie. The film now focuses on the popular character Johnny Cage instead of the original character Cole Young, and the central Mortal Kombat tournament will be a key part of the story. Most importantly, the trailer showed off the fighters using their signature special moves – something the Street Fighter movies have consistently struggled to do.
Mortal Kombat II’s New Trailer Paid Homage to the Games
Fighting games are all about the battles themselves, and what really sets the Street Fighter series apart is its diverse range of fighting styles. These styles are often showcased through special moves that involve incredible powers or unique weapons.
The trailer for Mortal Kombat II featured its characters using their signature special moves, like Raiden’s Torpedo, Shang Tsung’s Soul Taker, Sindel’s Banshee Scream, and Scorpion’s iconic Spear. These moves are central to fighting games, so it makes sense to include them in adaptations. However, live-action films, especially Street Fighter, have often had trouble pulling them off effectively.
In the world of Street Fighter, powerful fighters can harness their inner energy, known as ki, to perform amazing feats. The most iconic example is the hadouken – a fireball-like attack used by Ryu and others trained in the ansatsuken style. Despite the games’ popularity, these special moves have been surprisingly uncommon in the various Street Fighter movies and TV shows over the last 32 years.
Fighting Game Adaptations Have Ignored One of the Genre’s Most Crucial Elements
The 1994 Street Fighter movie only featured one character performing his signature moves, and even then, these were explained as being powered by magnets in his costume, not actual superpowers. The 2009 film, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, did the same thing – limiting the use of special moves – until the very end. In the final fight, Chun-Li managed to create a single energy blast, a move she usually performs easily in the games, which many fans found disappointing.

This change made the characters feel too similar, eliminating what made them individually strong. It also prevented several characters from using their special powers for the first half of the movie. Although Arcana is part of the Mortal Kombat II story, it hasn’t been featured in any of the trailers, and we haven’t seen any characters with the dragon birthmark yet.
Fighting game movies often leave out or change special moves, likely in an attempt to seem more realistic or dramatic. However, fans of these games – particularly those of franchises like Street Fighter – don’t want that. If a movie presents abilities like shooting fireballs as commonplace within its world, audiences will accept them much more easily.
It’s still unknown if the new Street Fighter movie will showcase special moves like the recent Mortal Kombat II film. The only preview released so far showed a Flash Kick, but didn’t include iconic attacks like Hadoukens. After years of disappointing fighting game movies, both Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter have the potential to be truly great adaptations – but only if they fully embrace what makes the games special.
