I’m so excited that this hidden gem of a horror movie is finally getting the attention it deserves! It didn’t do great in theaters when it came out six years ago, but trust me, it’s genuinely scary and I think it’s going to find a huge audience now that it’s coming to streaming.
Horror fans won’t have to wait much longer to stream Come Play, featuring Gillian Jacobs from Community, on Peacock. The movie will be available to stream starting March 31st.
What’s Come Play About?
Come Play is an extended version of the filmmaker’s earlier short film, Larry. The movie centers on Oliver, a young boy with autism who doesn’t speak and mainly uses his tablet and phone to connect with others, played by Azhy Robertson. Gillian Jacobs and John Gallagher Jr. star as Oliver’s parents, Sarah and Marty, who are struggling with a failing marriage.
Oliver discovers a strange app called “Misunderstood Monsters” and connects with a seemingly lonely creature named Larry. Little does he know, this connection brings a real monster into his world. Throughout the film, Come Play follows Oliver and his family as they struggle to escape Larry’s anger.
When Come Play was released in 2020, critics weren’t impressed. However, audiences generally enjoyed the suspenseful and character-focused horror film. As of today, Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 57% ‘rotten’ rating based on reviews from critics, while viewers give it a 67% score (‘Popcornmeter’) based on over 500 user reviews and 120 critic reviews.
Negative reviews significantly hurt Come Play‘s performance in theaters. The film only earned $13.2 million despite costing $9 million to make—far less than the typical amount needed to become profitable. However, releasing it on streaming services might help more people discover the movie.
What’s Next for Community and Come Play Star Gillian Jacobs?
Despite ongoing hopes for a movie to conclude the popular series Community, it doesn’t seem likely to happen in the near future. In July 2025, a source stated there are currently no updates on the film, though the cast remains enthusiastic about the possibility of reuniting someday and working together again.
Good news for Gillian Jacobs fans! She’ll be back on the big screen soon in the upcoming comedy, The Musical, directed by Giselle Bonilla. The film stars Will Brill as Doug Leibowitz, a middle school teacher and playwright who attempts to put on a school musical after finding out his ex-girlfriend (played by Jacobs) is now dating the principal (played by Rob Lowe).
The new musical debuted at the Sundance Film Festival last month, but it hasn’t been announced when it will be in theaters. Jacobs also appeared as Tiffany, Richie’s ex-wife, on the show The Bear. It’s currently unknown if she’ll be back for future seasons.
Come Play will be available for streaming on Peacock beginning Mar. 31.
