Today star Danika Mason stopped at airport after drinking drama at the Winter Olympics: ‘Thought I looked suspicious’

Sports presenter Danika Mason recently had a problem with US customs officials when arriving in Las Vegas after a trip to Italy.

Recently, 34-year-old Today show host Danika found herself in the news after a live broadcast from the Winter Olympics where she stumbled over her words after having a few drinks.

She’s back in the headlines, this time because customs officials at the airport found her large amount of luggage ‘suspicious’ when she arrived in Las Vegas.

Danika confidently described the incident that occurred on Thursday when Karl Stefanovic, the show’s host, questioned her about her luggage after she returned from Italy.

Karl, 51, commented live from Nevada before the start of the NRL season, saying he wished he’d seen what clothes someone packed when going directly from the Winter Olympics to Las Vegas.

Danika explained that she had two suitcases and was briefly held up at the airport the night before because an official found her appearance suspicious.

She explained that the two suitcases were filled with ski equipment, responding to his question about where she’d been. She mentioned she’d been facing extremely cold temperatures in Italy.

This news follows Danika’s recent on-air apology on Today, which she made after her Winter Olympics reports from Italy received a lot of public attention.

During a live report from Livigno last Thursday on a morning show, Danika apologized for having had something to drink the night before.

‘And guys, just before we do go, I just want to take a moment if that’s okay, just to apologise,’ she began.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their kind messages. I’m doing alright, just a little embarrassed about everything.

I made a mistake and shouldn’t have been drinking, especially given the cold and the high altitude. I really misread the situation.

Okay, let’s be real – I wasn’t at my best. Skipping dinner probably didn’t help my focus, but ultimately, I own what happened. It just wasn’t up to the standards I hold myself to, and I’m committed to doing better.

‘So, in saying that, I am genuinely sorry.’

Danika thanked everyone who expressed concern after viewers noticed she was speaking unclearly during a live television appearance yesterday.

Karl, known for a slightly chaotic appearance on Today after the 2009 Logies awards, complimented his coworker for her dedication.

‘I don’t even know what you’re talking about,’ he said.

‘You’re the best, Danika. Don’t worry about it. Let’s move on.’
