Jesy Nelson’s new documentary on Amazon Prime will explain the reasons behind her unexpected departure from the group Little Mix.
Singer Jesy Nelson, 34, shared a preview of her upcoming documentary, ‘Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix,’ on Instagram on Thursday. The documentary will be released on February 13th.
The documentary series focuses on a very difficult period in her life, following her path to becoming a mother. It details the health challenges she faced during pregnancy, including a condition called Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome, and the birth of her twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe. Sadly, the girls were diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA1).
The trailer begins with Jesy gazing out at an empty stadium, explaining that she’s never discussed this before. She shares that her lifelong dream was to entertain others, and it initially felt incredible, but that feeling quickly disappeared. She admits she’s always been silent about it and that she was the one who ultimately decided to leave.
A series of clips from her time in Little Mix are shown, revealing moments where she cried and had to sit out of dance rehearsals.
‘I’ve really struggled keeping all of this in… Now I’m ready to tell my side of the story.’
Jesy Nelson rose to fame with Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall, and Perrie Edwards as part of the group Little Mix. They first appeared on the show The X Factor in 2011.
Jesy Nelson’s former mentor, Tulisa Contostavlos, appears briefly in the documentary and reflects on Jesy’s difficulties, saying that when you’re determined to achieve something, it’s easy to overlook the potential downsides.
After winning The X Factor, the singer faced harsh online criticism about her appearance, which negatively affected her mental well-being.
The singer lost weight and came back to perform on The X Factor in 2013, but continued to receive hurtful criticism. This eventually contributed to a drug overdose.
In her BBC documentary, Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out, Jesy Nelson revealed she once felt so overwhelmed that she considered ending her life, saying, “I just needed the pain to stop.”
‘I remember going to the kitchen and just took as many tablets as I could.
‘Then I laid in bed for ages and kept thinking, “Let it happen. Hurry up”‘.
She recalled thinking, “Even if I were the thinnest person alive, this feeling wouldn’t disappear.” That realization, she said, was when her depression became severe.
In December 2020, Jesy confirmed that she was going to leave Little Mix after nine years.
She announced on Instagram that she’s prioritizing her own happiness and that being part of the group had negatively affected her mental health.
Following her departure from the band, Jesy began a solo music career, releasing songs like “Boyz,” “Bad Thing,” and “Mine.” She later decided to take a break from public life.
After Little Mix went on break in 2022, Jade, Perrie, and Leigh-Anne each started working on their own individual projects.
The three singers have often publicly supported each other, but their relationship with Jesy Nelson became strained after she left the group. She shared in 2023 that they hadn’t communicated since her departure.
The documentary also shows a heartbreaking scene where Jesy and her former fiancé, Zion Foster, learn from a doctor that their twin daughters have only a 5% chance of surviving until birth.
A new clip from Jesy’s time in the hospital shows her crying and expressing her frustration with her body, saying, ‘I hate that my body is letting me down’.
Jesy’s mom, Janice, shared her fears about the pregnancy, saying she couldn’t bear to think what would happen if something went wrong – little knowing what challenges lay ahead.
Jesy said the documentary is so painful to watch following her twins’ diagnosis.
As a lifestyle expert working with families, I often talk about Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or SMA. Type 1 is the most serious form, and it usually shows up in babies. What we see with Type 1 is significant muscle weakness, making it hard for little ones to swallow and often leading to breathing difficulties. It’s a challenging condition, and early awareness is key.
Jesy is now working to make screening for SMA1 part of the newborn blood spot test, often called the heel prick test. She’s started a petition to make this happen, so all babies can be tested for the condition at birth.
Jesy is pregnant with twins and the show follows her journey, exploring the happiness, anxieties, and challenges of expecting two babies.
The series documents Jesy’s challenging pregnancy, including a rare and dangerous condition called Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome, and the emotional difficulties she faced.
Jesy is going through the ups and downs of pregnancy, facing her fears and discovering inner strength with help from weekly hospital check-ups, honest talks, and the constant love and support of her family and friends.
This series isn’t just about becoming a mother; she’s also facing her past. She’ll discuss leaving Little Mix in 2020, and for the first time, she’s openly talking about the intense pressures of being famous, her struggles with mental health, and the issues that caused controversy.
Before becoming a mom, Jesy shared with Amazon that she’s excited to let everyone follow her journey as she prepares to welcome her twin daughters, Ocean and Story. She’s looking forward to openly sharing this new chapter of her life.
To be honest, this pregnancy has been really challenging because of the high risk involved. You’ll see all the ups and downs and emotional moments we’ve experienced.
I’m excited to share this new phase of my life with you all as I let go of the past. I truly hope you enjoy following along!
