To mark the 10-year anniversary, director Zack Snyder is sharing more details about his ideas for the DC Universe that never came to fruition. He also hinted at a potential project that might draw him back to working on DC films.
In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Zack Snyder revealed he originally intended to make a second solo Superman film. However, plans changed as Man of Steel led into Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and then Justice League, ultimately putting the Superman movie on hold. He also mentioned the film would have included a specific villain…
Zack Snyder originally envisioned a standalone Superman film focused on the Brainiac storyline, intending to develop it after establishing a clear timeline for the DC Universe. However, that plan changed, and a different film followed Superman. Ultimately, Snyder considers his entire DC film series to be one large story centered around Superman.
Ultimately, this is a Superman story, even with Batman’s significant role. It’s a film about Superman being the one who endures and saves everyone – he’s essential to the entire universe. We saw Batman’s sacrifice as necessary to create the world where Superman can thrive, and that was our guiding principle throughout the process, Snyder explained.
Zack Snyder Would Still Make The Dark Knight Returns Movie
Zack Snyder shared how Frank Miller’s groundbreaking comic, The Dark Knight Returns, deeply impacted him as a young artist, long before he ever considered directing a film like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He remembered being profoundly moved by the comic but having no outlet to express it creatively. At that time, the idea of a Batman versus Superman movie was completely unrealistic, even in his imagination. He kept the comic close by, always having it on display in his workspace, letting the ideas simmer for years.
Despite everything, Snyder says he’d eagerly take on the chance to make a movie based on The Dark Knight Returns.
I’ll be completely honest, if I had the chance, I’d still make a movie based on The Dark Knight Returns, Snyder said. I definitely drew inspiration from it, borrowing and paying homage as much as I could within the world I was building. But Dark Knight Returns is a self-contained masterpiece – it doesn’t need to rely on anything else. It’s a brilliant take on the classic superhero myths we all know.
While The Dark Knight Returns has already been made into a well-received film, Zack Snyder likely envisions an even more ambitious adaptation for the big screen.
