Dear readers, a new author has taken over the role of Lady Whistledown in society. Following Penelope’s departure, the latest season of Bridgerton ended by hinting at her replacement, but we’ll have to wait before finding out who it is.
We’re still determined to figure out who’s behind Lady Whistledown! We’ve put together a list of the most likely candidates, ranking them from least to most suspicious. See if your guess matches ours!

10. Francesca Stirling
Okay, so Francesca, played by Hannah Dodd, seems pretty quiet and keeps to herself, but honestly, that makes me think she could be a dark horse in all this. Plus, she specifically said she’s done with getting married after what happened to her husband, John Stirling. It got me wondering… maybe she’ll throw us a curveball and get involved in something totally unexpected instead?
What to Read Next
Something’s definitely happening with Michaela, ever since she left after that sweet moment with the other person. Maybe, while that situation unfolds, Francesca will be motivated by all the drama to shake things up and do something surprising?

9. Violet Bridgerton
Violet had a major storyline in season four, falling in love with Lord Anderson. Their relationship became quite intense, but Violet realized she needed to focus on her own path and didn’t want to rush into marriage. As a result, Marcus ended the relationship.
Honestly, I’m kind of excited about Violet Bridgerton finding her own path after becoming a widow! I never expected her to maybe…copy some of Penelope’s choices, like living independently and doing her own thing. It feels a little out of character for Lady Bridgerton, but I’m totally here for it and would love to see where it goes!

8. Queen Charlotte
Queen Charlotte is always eager to hear the newest rumors, and she’s already attempted to copy Penelope’s writing style. Could she be developing her own unique voice now?
Charlotte found Alice’s silly plan to help Sophie hilarious, and it made her think she could bring her own unique flair to the Lady Whistledown persona. The Queen already controls society, but it would be a huge surprise if people learned she had even more influence over their lives.
Charlotte definitely likes hearing gossip, but she’d rather receive it than seek it out herself, unless she can get someone else to find it for her.

7. Cressida Cowper
Cressida, now Lady Penwood, has become more reflective. Given her past experience pretending to be Lady Whistledown when she was acting mischievously, could she try to take on that role again, but this time authentically as herself?
Perhaps Cressida’s past failures are the reason people wouldn’t suspect her of being involved. She had a very public misstep last season, but it’s possible she improved her abilities while she was out of the spotlight. You never can tell what someone is capable of.

6. Posy Li
Posy finally found her voice to defend Sophie, but she still seems a bit unsure of herself. If she’s back for more seasons, the anonymity of being Lady Whistledown could be a great way for her to express herself openly, something she struggles with due to her controlling mother, Araminta.
The new columnist doesn’t necessarily need to be a main character from Bridgerton, and choosing Posy for the role would be a great way to keep her involved in the story.

5. Portia Featherington
Portia loves finding out all the latest news whenever her daughter, Penelope, has a guest. She’s become quite the town gossip, and she enjoys it!
Portia has always thrived on being involved in everything, and this situation gives her the spotlight she’s been wanting. Imagine the shock and conflict when Penelope discovers her own mother has secretly been writing Lady Whistledown all along!

4. Lady Danbury
Even though Lady Danbury seemed to approve of her travels, the show’s creator, Jess Brownell, has confirmed to Deadline that the character will still be involved in the fifth season of Bridgerton.
So, after hearing Brownell talk about how interesting the relationship between Agatha and Queen Charlotte could be, it totally makes sense to me that Lady Danbury would be the one with all the inside scoop on the Queen! It feels like a perfect follow-up to that idea.

3. Eloise Bridgerton
Eloise Bridgerton (played by Claudia Jessie) has been a suspect as Lady Whistledown before, especially since she used to admire the anonymous writer. Preferring books and avoiding the pressure to find a husband, Eloise has been spending a lot of time with her younger sister, Hyacinth (Florence Hunt), trying to maintain her independence.
Even though the story suggests Eloise will eventually get married, right now she seems much more focused on pursuing her dream of becoming a published writer and avoiding her family’s attempts to set her up with a husband.

2. Alice Mondrich
Alice quickly became a trusted confidante to the Queen, evolving from a hesitant newcomer to a bold advisor. She played a key role in helping Benedict find a date for a masked ball and was vital in securing social acceptance for both him and Sophie.
Alice is direct and honest, which would make her a fantastic Lady Whistledown. Just because she has a strong sense of right and wrong doesn’t mean she’s not the author – we haven’t seen any scandalous gossip yet, so maybe she’s planning to change things up and offer a fresh perspective.

1. Hyacinth Bridgerton
Hyacinth is getting ready to make her debut in society and has jokingly said that the gossip columnist, Whistledown, won’t be covering it. Perhaps she wants to make a strong impression and be noticed on her own merits instead?
If Bridgerton continues and eventually adapts Hyacinth’s storyline, focusing on her early on is a smart way to ensure viewers remain interested in her character.
She went to the ball in disguise right before everything fell apart, meaning she knows as much as anyone about what happened. Perhaps Hyacinth enjoyed being unnoticed and is getting used to it?
One final thought concerns that last Whistledown line: “We are going to have so much fun!”
The narration was once again done by the wonderful Julie Andrews, but this time it had a playful, energetic quality that seemed perfectly suited to the character of Hyacinth.
We’ll simply have to wait and see.
Bridgerton is streaming on Netflix.
