Early reactions to The Bride! are very positive ahead of its release next week. The film is a fresh take on Bride of Frankenstein, starring Jessie Buckley as the Bride, who is brought to life when Frankenstein’s monster (Christian Bale) convinces a scientist to build him a companion.
A young woman is brought back to life, becoming known as The Bride. However, the consequences are far greater than anyone expected, spiraling into murder, possession, a rebellious cultural shift, and a passionate, dangerous love affair.
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s new movie premiered in London last night and early reactions on social media suggest it’s a hit.

Rachel Leishman of The Mary Sue praised the film as “a love letter to storytelling, science fiction, movies, and so much more.” She also highlighted its stunning take on Frankenstein and the powerful performances of Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, concluding that Maggie Gyllenhaal created something truly special.
BJ Colangelo of This Ends At Prom called the film both incredibly bold and original, and hailed it as one of the greatest monster movie updates ever made.

While many Frankenstein films explore the dangers of human arrogance, the new movie, #TheBrideMovie, delves deeper, questioning how we deal with the problems created by others, as Colangelo explained.
In a review of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride, Kristen Lopez of The Film Maven praised the film as bold, unconventional, and unapologetically itself. She highlighted strong performances from Buckley and Bale, and suggested it achieves what the movie JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX aimed for but missed. While noting the script has some loose ends, Lopez ultimately describes the film as unique and unlike anything currently being made.

Fandango’s Erik Davis praised The Bride!, calling it energetic and wild, with a captivating performance by Jessie Buckley. He described the film as ferocious, funny, chaotic, and romantic.
Man, THE BRIDE! totally feels like a love letter to old-school movies, but it’s also a really fresh and exciting monster flick. I seriously hope we get more movies like this – it’s exactly what cinema needs!
Okay, so the cast for this movie is seriously stacked! Besides the awesome Buckley and Bale (who just won a BAFTA, by the way!), you’ve got Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, and even Julianne Hough. It’s a who’s who of amazing actors – I’m really excited to see them all together!
The Bride! is released in cinemas on March 6, 2026.
