Roger Sweet, the creator of He-Man, is facing a difficult time with dementia and has started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover his expenses.
I’ve been a huge fan of Roger Sweet’s work for years! It’s amazing to think that the incredibly talented 90-year-old who designed so many classic toys also created the Masters of the Universe! And get this – a live-action movie based on that franchise is finally coming out on June 5th, which I’m counting down the days for!
Marlene, his wife, shared news of his worsening dementia online and is asking for financial assistance to help cover the costs of his care at a memory care facility.
Roger is almost 91 and is sadly living with dementia. His condition has worsened, but I’ve been doing my best to care for him at home.
She said her husband recently took a walk, but came home confused and with bruises on his side.
After a trip to the emergency room, Sweet was admitted into the ICU for two brain bleeds.
It was a really tough decision, but my dad needed a level of care we just couldn’t provide at home anymore. Because of his dementia and a growing risk of falls, his doctors gently suggested a memory care community. It wasn’t about restricting him, but ensuring he had the constant support and supervision he needed to stay safe and comfortable. Ultimately, it was about giving him the best possible quality of life given his changing needs.
Sweet recently made his move into a facility to receive full-time care.
Marlene wrote that his condition has been sadly worsening since he arrived just a few days ago, and it’s heartbreaking to witness.
His wife, married to him for nearly 40 years, explained that his medical care costs more than $10,000 each month, and Medicare doesn’t cover it.
I’m asking for help from fellow He-Man fans to cover some unexpected bills. Any contribution, no matter how small, would be a huge relief.
In her GoFundMe message, she highlighted Sweet’s significant contributions to the toy industry, noting his 15+ years as a toy designer at Mattel.
Roger created the first He-Man character, giving him his name and appearance. He then spent years collaborating with other artists to develop the rest of the characters and playsets that captivated children then and continue to entertain them now.
Before getting sick, Sweet enjoyed meeting fans at various events and conventions.
‘I was able to accompany him to several, and it was fun to see him interacting with HE-MAN fans.’
Donations on the page have currently reached over $80,000 – with the initial goal being $50,000.
Sweet created He-Man as well as the Masters of the Universe toy line in 1982.
An animated series titled He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe began airing in 1983 through 1985.
Released in 1985, the film He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword led to the creation of the animated series She-Ra: Princess of Power.
The popular He-Man and Masters of the Universe toy line created by Mattel is being made into a new superhero movie called Masters of the Universe.
The movie – which was directed by Travis Knight – is set to hit theaters later this year on June 5.
The film stars Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, alongside Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, Idris Elba, Alison Brie, Morena Baccarin, and Kristen Wiig.
According to IMDB, the movie’s story centers around a young man who learns he’s actually a prince from another planet. He has to find a magical sword and go back to his home world to save his kingdom.
Amazon MGM Studios dropped the first teaser trailer of the project last month in January.
I remember reading an interview with Kyle Gallner in People magazine last December. He was talking about getting ready to play He-Man, and he shared a lot about the intense physical training he went through to transform his body for the role. It was really interesting to hear how dedicated he was!
He confessed it was the most difficult experience of his life, a struggle he faced every single day. However, he also found it deeply rewarding to dedicate himself so completely to a goal.
The actor from Red, White & Royal Blue explained that preparing for the role was unlike anything he’d experienced before. He described how, each day, the ultimate goal felt distant, especially while gaining muscle mass.
‘I think it would be insincere for me to say that it was easy.’
Dolph Lundgren famously played He-Man in the 1987 movie Masters of the Universe, which also featured Courteney Cox, Frank Langella, and James Tolkan.
