One of the actors from the show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters suggested a surprising idea for a new series that could add to the Monsterverse universe.
Anders Holm, who plays Bill Randa in the Apple TV+ sci-fi series, had a thought about where the show could go next. Instead of always focusing on how humans react to the creatures and the disasters they cause, he suggested it might be interesting to explore a completely different perspective.
During a red carpet interview with Brandon Zachary from ScreenRant, Rebecca Hall (Holm) discussed a possible spinoff series. She explained it would center on the human side of the story – the people who work for the Monarch organization – rather than the monsters themselves.
The idea is a spin-off show, similar to ‘Lower Decks,’ focusing on the crew members who keep the Monarch spaceship running – maybe the engineers or even the cooks. I’m picturing a chef who hires his two friends, who are pretty laid-back, to work with him. He admits he’s lonely and just wants their companionship, even though they’re not necessarily the most dedicated workers. I think Apple would be interested in this concept, and we could negotiate a profit-sharing agreement.
Instead of focusing on massive destruction or a new monster, Holm’s idea is for a comedy similar to Star Trek: Lower Decks. It would show the everyday lives of the people working for Monarch – things like mechanics fixing equipment and chefs cooking meals. The concept shifts the focus from action and battles to a character-driven workplace comedy.
This comedic idea feels like a perfect fit for Anders Holm, given his experience. He’s famous for co-creating and starring in the sitcom Workaholics, which followed three friends working as telemarketers after dropping out of college. The show lasted seven seasons and gives you a good idea of the kind of humor he excels at.
I’ve been fascinated by the Monsterverse, and I’ve always been intrigued by Monarch, the secretive group dedicated to studying the Titans like Godzilla and Kong. We’ve seen them in the background of all the films, but I’m so excited that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters finally puts them front and center! Getting to know characters like Cate Randa, played by Anna Sawai, and Lee Shaw, portrayed by Kurt and Wyatt Russell, has been amazing. And seeing the return of William “Bill” Randa, played by Anders Holm, is fantastic – I can’t wait to see what happens with them all in season two!
During the interview, Holms briefly mentioned an idea: a show similar to Workaholics, potentially featuring the mechanics and chefs as the main characters, if a spin-off were ever made. The second season of Monarch will continue to focus on the organization’s global investigations into Titan activity, including Godzilla, Kong, and a newly discovered Titan.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 premieres Friday, February 27, on Apple TV+.
