Scream 7 sets unwanted Rotten Tomatoes record as it’s branded “worst in the franchise”

The newest Scream movie has received initial reviews that mark a low point for the series. Scream 7 is currently in theaters and brings back Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, who is now focused on keeping her daughter safe from a new Ghostface killer.

This isn’t a continuation of the recent Scream series, as Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega won’t be returning after leaving the franchise following the 2023 film.

The latest Scream movie has received mostly negative reviews, with one critic even calling it the worst in the series. Its low score of 38% on Rotten Tomatoes makes it the lowest-rated film in the Scream franchise so far.

This score is based on 80 reviews as of today, and it might change as more reviews are published. However, it needs to surpass the 45% rating of Scream 3 (from 2000) to avoid being the lowest-rated film.

Here’s what critics have been saying about the Kevin Williamson-directed sequel.

The Film Maven

Scream 7 is easily the weakest film in the Scream series. While another sequel seems likely, this installment feels rushed, disjointed, and lacks energy. The franchise has run its course and it’s time to let it end.

Tribune News Service

It feels like Scream 7 was created by simply feeding the original Scream into an AI – it has all the recognizable elements, but feels off in every way. It lacks humor, thrills, and suspense, and ultimately harms the reputation of what was once a strong film series.

RogerEbert.com

Ultimately, the biggest problem with Scream 7 is how easily it’s forgotten. After production issues arose in 2023, the filmmakers decided to revisit familiar ground rather than start fresh. While leaning on nostalgia seemed logical, the film unfortunately proved that trying to recapture the past doesn’t always work – even for a character like Sidney Prescott.

Los Angeles Times

Between forgotten safe rooms and failed attempts to stop the Ghostface killer, the characters consistently make incredibly foolish decisions. It starts to feel like the writer, Kevin Williamson, is intentionally trying to annoy the audience. Perhaps the biggest twist is that the creator of Scream wants to subvert—even dismantle—his own creation.

Screen International

Although it once playfully poked fun at horror tropes, this series has mostly fallen into using those same tired clichƩs, even with its occasional surprising or violent moments.

The Guardian

While there’s some potential—and early signs point to a successful launch for a potential Scream 8—the writing sometimes feels repetitive and lacks the impact it needs.

Scream 7 is out now in UK and US cinemas.
