Gwyneth Paltrow celebrated a new launch event in Colorado on Thursday with a glass of wine. She was there to promote Meiomi Pinot Noir, a wine brand from California.
The Academy Award-winning actress looked chic and elegant in a long white coat and skirt while socializing with other attendees at the Express Lift Bar in Vail.
Gwyneth Paltrow, 53, attended a party celebrating Meiomi wines. The event was one of a series of exclusive pop-ups Meiomi is hosting to showcase their wines in a relaxed, social atmosphere.
The actress recently faced criticism for promoting histotripsy, a non-invasive cancer treatment. Fans expressed disappointment, pointing out that she isn’t a doctor and shouldn’t be giving medical advice.
Gwyneth Paltrow discussed a new cancer treatment with Mike Blue, the CEO of HistoSonics, on her Goop podcast. She shared her personal experience with her father’s cancer and the negative effects of radiation therapy he endured.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s father, Bruce Paltrow, passed away in October 2002 at 58 years old. He had been battling throat and mouth cancer, and his death was due to pneumonia and the cancer returning.
Gwyneth Paltrow shared that her father’s throat cancer treatment and its side effects were incredibly difficult, describing the experience as ‘awful’ in a post on Instagram.
Gwyneth Paltrow said her father’s medical care was very aggressive and intrusive, and she confessed there were times her family questioned if the benefits outweighed the difficulties.
She told Blue that the radiation had severely burned his throat, making it impossible for him to swallow. ‘It was awful,’ she said.
Blue, who doesn’t seem to have a medical background according to his LinkedIn profile, predicted that future generations will question some current surgical and radiation treatments, calling them unnecessarily extreme.
He continued, ‘I fully believe we can eliminate a lot of that.’
Histotripsy is a new, non-invasive way to treat tumors. Approved by the FDA in 2023, it uses focused ultrasound waves to destroy liver tumors without using radiation or heat.
The University of Texas Cancer Center is currently running trials to see if histotripsy can treat tumors in organs beyond the liver. However, it’s not yet officially approved as a treatment for tumors anywhere except the liver.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, radiotherapy (also known as radiation therapy) is a highly effective cancer treatment, and is often used with chemotherapy and surgery.
People were shocked and quickly shared their concerns in the comments. Many feared the actress’s statements might prevent those who need it from seeking potentially life-saving radiation treatment for cancer.
A user who was treated for cancer 14 years ago with chemotherapy and radiation said they’d go through it all again, praising modern medicine. They also expressed hope that funding for cancer research in the U.S. will be restored.
Someone else shared that they had radiation treatment, which caused burning, but they felt it was completely worth it after 23 years, and encouraged others to listen to their doctors.
‘Please don’t, the misinformation from untrialed treatments kills,’ someone else wrote.
They added that while they hope this treatment will become available after proper testing, promoting it before clinical trials are complete would be harmful to people.
Another person agreed, stating that sharing this clip could be very harmful. They explained that while some cancers don’t respond to natural or alternative treatments, conventional medicine is often the only option for survival for those patients.
They added that increasing skepticism towards doctors, especially when cancer research funding is being reduced, puts people facing incredibly difficult and frightening choices at even greater risk.
Until better options emerge, it’s important not to discourage people from using the treatments that are currently available. Suggesting otherwise is inaccurate, one expert noted.
The Daily Mail reached out to Paltrow for comment.
