5 best movies added to Netflix, BBC and more this week including Jessie Buckley’s “gripping” drama

This film is based on the real-life story of the Bennetts – inspired by María Belón and her family – and follows their harrowing struggle for survival during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

I recently watched The Impossible, and wow, it really stuck with me. Naomi Watts is incredible in it – she even got an Oscar nomination for her performance! Ewan McGregor and the young actors, Samuel Joslin and Oaklee Pendergast, were great too. I read a review in Salon that called it both intense and totally gripping, and I’d have to agree.

Best movie new to BBC iPlayer this week

The 2022 drama Women Talking features a stellar cast including Jessie Buckley, Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Ben Whishaw, and Frances McDormand.

Written and directed by Sarah Polley, who received an Oscar for adapting the screenplay, the film centers on a community of American Mennonite women grappling with shocking revelations about sexual assault committed by the men in their colony and what the future holds for them.

The film has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a ‘Fresh’ rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Spectator praised it as “compelling, gripping, powerful, and as tense as a thriller.”

This week on BBC iPlayer, you can watch Spider-Man (2002), Calendar Girls, Dark Waters, Malcolm X, and the classic action film Point Break (1991).

Best movie new to ITVX this week

Rotten Tomatoes calls 2001: A Space Odyssey one of the most important science fiction films ever made. The movie was directed by the acclaimed Stanley Kubrick, who also co-wrote the story with celebrated author Arthur C. Clarke.

The story follows a space mission to explore a mysterious alien object. However, the ship’s computer, HAL, starts acting strangely and becomes a famous movie villain.

The film is famous for its memorable scenes, like a captivating vortex effect, and stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, and Douglas Rain.

Best movie new to Channel 4 this week

Released in 2017, the drama Journeyman tells the story of a champion boxer facing his final fight. A severe head injury during the match dramatically changes his life.

Paddy Considine wrote, directed, and starred in the film Journeyman, which also features Jodie Whittaker, Anthony Welsh, and Paul Popplewell. The movie received positive reviews, earning an 85% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

According to Metro, the movie is a touching story about love and struggle, featuring excellent performances from two British actors.
