Prime Video’s The Expanse Was Saved By The Greatest TV Campaign

The popular sci-fi show on Prime Video wouldn’t be as well-remembered today if dedicated fans hadn’t successfully campaigned to save it after it was initially cancelled.

It’s rare for fan campaigns to actually work. While fans often start petitions and express their disappointment online when a show is canceled, these efforts are usually overlooked. However, occasionally a campaign gains so much attention and support that it can surprisingly bring a canceled show back to life.

A popular sci-fi series, now streaming on Prime Video, was revived thanks to a dedicated fan effort after being unexpectedly canceled before it could finish its story.

From the start, The Expanse received widespread praise from critics. Despite its success with both viewers and reviewers, SyFy canceled the show after only three seasons in May 2018. This cancellation sparked an incredible fan campaign to save it.

Fans of the show The Expanse, calling themselves “Screaming Firehawks,” used a crowdfunding campaign to hire a plane. The plane flew over Amazon Studios in Santa Monica for four hours, trailing a banner that read “#SAVE THE EXPANSE” (according to Space.com).

More than 100,000 fans signed a petition on Change.org asking for the show to continue after its third season. Support also came from well-known personalities like astronaut Andreas Mogensen, comedian Patton Oswalt, and author George R.R. Martin, who all publicly backed the campaign to bring the series back.

The campaign got even more surprising when fans chipped in $4,000 to launch a 3D-printed model of the Rocinante to the edge of space, as reported by Inquisitr. They also shared a photo of the launch online, on Reddit.

It was almost certain this fan campaign would work, and it did! Amazon Prime Video ended up taking over production of seasons 4, 5, and 6, and even Jeff Bezos publicly complimented the show, telling Forbes,

Fantastic news, everyone! I’m thrilled to report that The Expanse has been rescued! Honestly, it’s one of the most compelling shows I’ve ever seen, and the team behind it is just unbelievably gifted. I can’t recommend it enough!

The Expanse Wouldn’t Have Been Half As Iconic Without Its Revival

Even its first three seasons made The Expanse a fantastic show, and it was quickly becoming a standout in the science fiction world. The show hadn’t even reached the halfway point of the book series it was based on, meaning there were still many stories left to tell. Without a dedicated fan campaign and subsequent renewal, The Expanse on Prime Video could easily have been another promising sci-fi show cut short before it could fully realize its potential.

When The Expanse returned, it consistently delivered fantastic seasons. The show also wrapped up its run on Prime Video with a satisfying conclusion, making sure its story felt complete and worthwhile.

It’s frustrating seeing amazing sci-fi shows like The Expanse get canceled too soon. When The Expanse was brought back by Prime Video after so many of us fans campaigned for it, it felt like a real win. It showed that if we’re passionate enough, we can sometimes save the shows we love!
