Directed by Benjamin Fastvold, who also co-wrote The Brutalist, the movie has a strong cast including Lewis Pullman, Thomasin McKenzie, Stacy Martin, and Christopher Abbott.

Despite not being a financial success in theaters, the movie earned back only $3 million of its $10 million production cost, it was well-received by both critics and audiences.

The movie is receiving positive feedback from both audiences and critics. It currently has an 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics have given it an 87% rating. Many reviewers have highlighted the film’s strong storytelling, thoughtful exploration of themes like faith and feminism, and a standout performance by Seyfried.

Amanda Seyfried Recalled The Exact Moment She Came To Embody Ann Lee

For Jessica Seyfried, getting into character as Lee started well before filming began. She spent time preparing for the role, even while working on the song “Beautiful Treasures.” As she explained to Little White Lies, she and the director, Mona Fastvold, along with her dog, practiced finding the right emotions. The song itself, she described, represents three key moments in Ann’s life: the joy of new love, the anticipation of pregnancy, and the pain of loss.

She explained that the dance had three variations, all blended together, which meant she had to record ‘Beautiful Treasures’ repeatedly and then perform it live. She described the studio sessions as demanding, saying Mona kept asking for retakes with different emotional approaches – sometimes to cry, sometimes to whisper – and the process felt never-ending.

Although it was challenging, Seyfried and Fastvold ultimately mastered the emotional performance of the song. “I felt relieved when I arrived on set knowing I had it down,” Seyfried explained. “It’s draining until you reach that point, but that’s perfectly fine—that’s what makes it meaningful.”

The Testament of Ann Lee debuts on digital platforms on Mar. 10.
