Encanto Sequel Possibilities Discussed by Director 5 Years Later

The movie was a massive success, breaking all expectations and becoming a beloved part of Disney’s legacy. Even though it’s been five years since its release in November 2021, fans are still eagerly hoping for a sequel.

The movie Encanto follows the Madrigal family, who live in a magical house in Colombia. Each member of the family has a unique gift, but Mirabel doesn’t receive one. When the family’s magic begins to fade, Mirabel believes she might be the one who can save their home and reunite the family, discovering her own value along the way.

At a recent event celebrating the release of the movie on home video, ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hulledner interviewed director Byron Howard. He talked about the potential for a sequel and his desire to create another enchanting experience for fans.

What’s incredible about making movies is that they typically take around five years to complete. Often, the same people work on multiple films, like Yvette Merino, Jared Brown, and myself, along with many others on our team. So, the challenge is figuring out how to manage overlapping projects. Working on Encanto was a fantastic experience – our cast and crew really became like family, especially connecting with the Colombian community. It was truly an amazing and eye-opening journey.

The movie provided a welcome distraction and a way for everyone involved to connect while they were isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was amazing to create a movie focused on a large family living together, and I really hope ‘Encanto’ gets the theatrical release it deserves—one that isn’t overshadowed by the pandemic and all the restrictions that came with it. We’re all incredibly passionate about this film.

After working on the Zootopia movies, creating music for Encanto has been described as a wonderful opportunity. Though Howard’s statements have fueled hope for another Encanto film, talk of a sequel isn’t new. As recently as March 2025, cast members told People magazine they were developing a story. While a sequel hasn’t been officially confirmed, reports suggest producers are considering how to continue the story, possibly focusing on Bruno and how the family’s magical abilities develop over time.

Stephanie Beatriz, who voiced Mirabel in Encanto, shared an update on a possible sequel in 2023. She told ScreenRant that she hadn’t received any news about Encanto 2. She speculated that the directors’ busy schedules might be the reason, and suggested the project could move forward once they finish their current work.

I really enjoyed working with that team and would jump at the chance to do so again. Jared Bush and Byron Howard are probably busy with other projects right now, but I’d love to revisit that film. I get asked about a sequel all the time when I visit the parks – fans are really hoping for one! There’s definitely more story to tell, and a lot of people would be excited to see it, but I haven’t heard anything concrete about it happening.
