You’re missing out on a brilliant sci-fi series on Netflix! It features a bleak, post-apocalyptic world, the unsettling development of a powerful AI, and the emergence of dangerous doomsday cults.
It’s surprising more science fiction fans aren’t watching this show – it has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes! The reason? It begins like a typical comedy…
Netflix Sitcom Brockmire Transitions into Sci-Fi Genius
Featuring Hank Azaria, Amanda Peet, and Tyrel Jackson Williams, the series Brockmire centers on a baseball commentator trying to get his career back on track after a very public meltdown.
This sitcom, spanning three seasons, centers on a charismatic lead character voiced by Azaria, who battles his personal struggles while passionately sharing his love for baseball. He’s joined by Jules James, a promoter who enjoys a drink, and Charles, his tech-minded assistant who isn’t a fan of sports.
But in its fourth season, the show takes a surprising turn by leaping forward in time, showing what life is like starting in 2030. An older Brockmire finds himself in an America struggling with environmental and political problems, and he’s trying to revive baseball, which has become very unpopular.
I’m absolutely captivated by this world – it’s a truly wild place! There’s a war raging over these lands called the ‘Disputed Territories’, and it’s heartbreaking. But it gets stranger – there are these doomsday cults forming around the fiery messes left by fracking, which is terrifying. And the most unsettling part? This AI assistant, Limon, seems to be secretly taking over everything, all as part of some hidden conflict with a copy of itself in China. It’s a lot to take in, but I can’t look away!
The fourth season of the show continues to center on Brockmire, his relationships, and his career, but it also explores thought-provoking, satirical themes similar to Black Mirror. It playfully critiques current issues and imagines how future technology and societal changes might unfold. Throughout it all, the AI character Limon plays an increasingly important role, ultimately connecting to the resolution of Brockmire’s story.
Similar to the show Search Party, which also took a surprising turn in its final season with a zombie outbreak, Brockmire prioritizes its characters. It boldly jumps ahead in time, exploring the comedic possibilities of what the future holds for them.
Is Brockmire Worth Watching for Its Sci-Fi Final Season?
Brockmire is a critically acclaimed and popular comedy series. Though its final season takes a fun turn into science fiction, the show was already excellent. Hank Azaria delivers a brilliant performance as Brockmire – a flawed but lovable character who’s both chaotic and surprisingly moral, and whose good intentions often lead to trouble.
Season four takes the show in a new direction, but really, each season of Brockmire completely changes things for the main character and all the show’s quirky, flawed personalities. The writing is incredibly smart too – Brockmire is always talking, but every word is funny and purposeful; there’s never any wasted dialogue.
Hank Azaria, a highly respected voice actor, suggests that even though his characters can be wildly unpredictable, their unique ability to offer insightful observations is what allows them to remain relevant and succeed, no matter what happens in the world.
Because the show covers a long period of time, the relationships feel more intense. The back-and-forth between Brockmire and James unfolds over decades, and we see Charles slowly become more self-assured and powerful as the series progresses.
Where to Watch Brockmire Now
Brockmire is a fantastic, modern sitcom that really shines, especially with the clever sci-fi elements added in its last season. The characters are incredibly well-developed, dealing with relatable issues like overcoming addiction, managing public image, and even facing off against biker gangs. You can currently watch it on streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and AMC+ in the US, Crave in Canada, and Netflix in the UK. Episodes are also available to buy on Apple and Amazon.
You won’t want to miss Brockmire, one of the most clever and hilarious comedies in years. It follows the show’s main character as he goes from hitting rock bottom to getting a second chance in a strange future ruled by a powerful AI and ultra-rich people who travel by airship and hunt dolphins as a hobby.
