Twiggy, 76, reveals her exercise regime and what she eats in a day as she reflects on 60-year modelling career

After spending six decades in the public eye, Twiggy has shared details about her daily exercise routine and diet, explaining how she stays fit.

Lesley Lawson, known as Twiggy, became a famous teen model in the 1960s and a symbol of British culture during that era. She is now 76 years old.

She was dubbed ‘The Face of ’66’ and ‘The Cockney Kid with a face to launch a thousand ships’.

I was so thrilled to see Twiggy on the cover of Defined magazine! She talked about her current perspective on beauty and how she feels about getting older, and it was really inspiring. It’s lovely to hear her thoughts on these things.

I’m not extreme about it, but I’ve always made time for exercise. For the past twenty years, that’s been Pilates, and I truly believe it’s made a difference. I also try to eat a healthy diet – I really think what you eat affects how you feel.

I try to eat a lot of vegetables and salmon, and I prefer organic options whenever possible. Plus, I love dark chocolate, and I was thrilled to learn it has health benefits!

When asked about retirement, Twiggy explained that she doesn’t believe in fully stopping work. She feels it’s better to simply find a new hobby or interest if you leave one job.

I feel fortunate to be able to pursue my passions – I enjoy modelling, design, acting, and singing. I’m currently collaborating with Amy Wadge on some music, and we’ve already completed around four songs.

Singing is beneficial for everyone – it truly lifts your spirits. Recently, I’ve been traveling across Britain and Europe to share the documentary about Twiggy, which was directed by Sadie Frost. It’s been a fantastic journey, and I’ve received incredibly positive responses.

It’s launching in Japan, Australia, and the US this year. But I’ve pretty much done everything I’ve ever wanted to do – nothing too extreme, though, like skydiving!

Twiggy, famous for her boyish style when she started modeling, has said she always disliked wearing fussy, overly decorative dresses.

She explained that she’s always preferred trousers. Looking back at photos from the late 1960s, she noted that while she wore dresses for modeling shoots, she consistently chose trousers for her everyday style. She even had custom-made suits from Tommy Nutter, as she felt they suited her better.

Growing up, I wasn’t built like most girls. I never felt comfortable in frilly dresses – they just didn’t suit me. I preferred a funkier look, like mini skirts and boots.

I’ve moved past wearing mini skirts these days, but I love a good trouser suit. Paired with a nice top or a leather jacket, they’re much more comfortable and flattering than a dress, in my opinion.

Asked how she dealt with becoming famous at such a young age, Twiggy admitted it was ‘amazing’.

Before February 1966, when fashion journalist Deirdre McSherry unexpectedly called me ‘The Face of ’66,’ my life was pretty normal. I went to school, lived in Neasden with my wonderful parents and two older sisters, and had a genuinely happy childhood. It was a complete surprise!

I started my career working for Vogue and Elle in Paris. Then, Diana Vreeland brought me to America and helped me gain international recognition. Back then, if Diana Vreeland endorsed you, everyone paid attention – and I thrived on that opportunity.

I went straight from school to traveling the world – Paris, New York, everywhere! It was incredible to be wearing beautiful clothes and getting paid, all while still feeling like a schoolgirl.

Even though she achieved great fame, Twiggy hasn’t often considered the reasons behind her status as a fashion icon.

I’ve always avoided thinking too much about my past experiences. Once you start overanalyzing yourself, it can lead to a lot of problems.

She explained that she prefers being kind to others because it usually leads to kindness in return. While she’s capable of being assertive when necessary, she doesn’t want to spend her life feeling upset or complaining, as life is simply too short for that.
