Beyond the thrilling monster battles, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters delivers a compelling human story. Importantly, the Apple TV+ series deepens the overall story and world of the Monsterverse established in the films, offering crucial background for major events and showing us places and times we haven’t seen before.
I’m still reeling from the reveal of the Axis Mundi! It’s unlike anything we’ve seen so far – a totally separate world, not connected to the surface or even the Hollow Earth. The creatures and plants look a bit like those from the Hollow Earth, but this place feels different. There’s so much energy there, and time itself seems to be acting strangely. We only got a quick glimpse in season one, and honestly, I’m desperate to understand exactly where it fits into the bigger picture of the Monsterverse.
The Axis Mundi Exists Between The Hollow Earth And The Surface
In the Monsterverse, the surface world and the Hollow Earth are linked by special portals called “Vile Vortices.” To travel through these portals, a Titan must be present on each side. Axis Mundi is a turbulent area positioned between these two worlds, and it’s characterized by a mix of elements from both the surface and the Hollow Earth.
Unlike the Hollow Earth, which is one large, connected world, Axis Mundi is a network of underground tunnels and caverns. These tunnels allow massive creatures like Godzilla to travel freely, and Dr. Miura falling into Axis Mundi proves it’s a pathway Titans use to move between different surface locations, known as Vortices.
The connections between our world and the Hollow Earth, called ‘rifts,’ show up as spikes in gamma radiation – similar to what Hiroshi Randa monitored in the first season of Monarch. These rifts are usually unstable, but a Titan can hold one open long enough to travel through. This is how May, Keiko, and the Randa children were able to return home after Godzilla sent the Ion Dragon through the rift.
Time Dilation Occurs In Axis Mundi Due To Gravity
The Axis Mundi, positioned between the Earth’s surface and its interior, experiences gravity from both directions. This intense gravitational force, especially in the areas connecting these two places, causes distortions in time and space. Essentially, this extreme gravity slows down or speeds up time for those within the Axis Mundi, making their experience of time different from ours.
Axis Mundi is incredibly unstable, causing time to flow inconsistently. While Keiko Miura found that one day inside Axis Mundi felt like a year outside, Lee Shaw experienced a much greater difference. He spent about seven days within Axis Mundi, but twenty years passed on Earth. He entered in 1962 and emerged in 1982.
The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will continue to feature Lee Shaw within the mysterious location of Axis Mundi, allowing viewers to learn more about it as the characters face the dangerous Titan X. While its overall importance to the wider Monsterverse is still unknown, Axis Mundi is a fascinating addition to the connected storyline and offers many exciting possibilities.
