continues to be a beloved fantasy series globally. Following eight films and a separate three-movie series, HBO is creating a new TV show to introduce the wonders of the magical world to a fresh audience. However, HBO already has a highly praised young adult fantasy series, which will be a difficult act to follow.
The TV series His Dark Materials is based on Philip Pullman’s popular book series. It centers around a young girl who lives in a world filled with talking animals, witches, and other unusual creatures. Her adventures take her to different worlds, one of which is haunted by terrifying beings called spectres that steal people’s souls, leaving them empty. Some viewers have noted similarities between these spectres and the dementors from Harry Potter, suggesting the latter may have been inspired by Pullman’s work, though the connection is actually quite nuanced.
Spectres and Dementors Share Some Notable Characteristics
Spectres appear in the second book of the His Dark Materials series, The Subtle Knife. These ghostly, mist-like creatures are created whenever a portal to another universe is opened. They survive by consuming Dust, a strange substance present in all living things, particularly adults. Children are unable to see spectres, but adults can, and are very susceptible to their attacks. A spectre doesn’t kill its victims, but instead leaves them alive and mentally blank.
Dementors first appeared in the book Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. These cloaked figures are usually shrouded in mist and drain people of their happy memories, causing intense sadness. They are capable of delivering the ‘Dementor’s Kiss,’ a terrifying attack that removes a person’s soul, leaving them empty and without personality.
Spectres and dementors are often compared because they act in remarkably similar ways. Both authors, J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman, have stated that these creatures are meant to represent depression and other struggles with mental health. While dementors came out two years after spectres, leading some to believe they were inspired by them, similar creatures actually existed in literature before either one.
His Dark Materials and Harry Potter Both Draw From Larger Fantasy Conventions
Beyond the spectres in His Dark Materials and the dementors from Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings features another type of frightening, ghostly being. These creatures were once men, but the Rings of Power twisted them into terrifying, wraith-like figures. Unlike soul-eaters, they wear cloaks and spread cold and fear as they hunt for the One Ring. Though they appeared decades before the dementors and spectres and may have influenced their creation, they weren’t the very first creatures of their kind.
Fantasy stories frequently borrow from old myths and legends, which are filled with frightening, shadowy figures designed to inspire fear. Characters like the Grim Reaper and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come have probably inspired countless scary creatures in fantasy. The idea of monsters that steal souls also appears in myths around the world, and historically, some cultures even used these creatures to try and understand conditions like depression.
While spectres and dementors have some similarities, those traits are actually common in myths and monster stories from many cultures. It’s too simple to say one directly copied the other, as both were inspired by a long history of storytelling.
