Mary Cosby, a star on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, shared emotional concerns about her son’s health just before he sadly passed away a few months later.
Robert Cosby Jr. passed away on Monday at the age of 23. Police are investigating his death, which they initially responded to as a potential overdose. The official cause of death is still being determined.
Salt Lake City police responded to a medical emergency involving a 23-year-old man Monday night, according to TMZ. Details about the situation haven’t been released yet.
During the second part of the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Season 6 reunion, which aired on January 20th, Cosby became emotional while talking about her son, Robert, who has faced difficulties including time in jail and reported issues with substance abuse.
When the show was filmed, Robert was in jail awaiting trial after being arrested in November. He was accused of breaking a court order meant to protect his former wife, Alexiana Smokoff.
Mary told the cast she wasn’t concerned about him, and actually felt relieved knowing he was in a place where he wasn’t using drugs. She added that she’d much rather he be alive and there than not alive at all.
She went on to say she felt she had no choice but to let him face the consequences of his actions.
She explained that she needs to give him space to learn from his own choices, even if it means facing difficult consequences. She accepts that this is how he’ll grow.
‘It’s just, you don’t want to see your kid suffer, but I know it’s good,’ Mary explained.
Robert Jr. was released from jail earlier this month after serving two months behind bars.
He had been ordered to serve 99 days but received credit for time served.
Bravo confirmed the tragic news in a statement provided to the Daily Mail.
We were deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Mary’s son, Robert Jr. Mary is a very special part of our family, and we’re sending her and her family all our love and support during this incredibly painful time.
A separate statement was also shared on behalf of Mary Cosby and her husband, Robert Sr. Cosby.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our son, Robert Jr., who is now with God. While we grieve, we find comfort in our faith and the knowledge that he is at rest. We appreciate your prayers and rely on God’s strength to help us through this difficult time.
Mary Cosby has been a cast member on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City since the very beginning, and viewers have sometimes gotten glimpses into her family life on the show.
Following the news, Andy Cohen took to Threads to react to the heartbreaking news.
Cohen shared heartbreaking news from Salt Lake City, calling it every parent’s worst fear. He expressed deep sympathy for Mary and sent his love to her and Robert Sr.
Robert passed away only a few weeks after being released from the Salt Lake County Metro Jail, where he had been held for two months.
Robert’s lawyer, Clayton Simms, told People magazine that Robert deeply regrets his past actions and admits he made poor choices.
Three days after being released, Robert’s mother posted a photo of him with a thankful message: ‘Thank you for all your prayers. Love you.’
People who appear on the Real Housewives shows quickly shared their support in the comments.
Oh my gosh, Sutton Stracke actually wrote this! She said, and I quote, ‘Lots of prayers for you and Robert, Mary!’ I’m seriously living for this level of support – Sutton is such an angel, and I’m just so touched she’s sending good vibes their way. It’s everything!
Dolores Catania, from The Real Housewives of New Jersey, commented: ‘God bless Robert.’
Her Real Housewives of Salt Lake City costar Heather Gay simply sent her ‘love.’
In November, his wife, Alexiana Smokoff, filed for divorce.
Over the years, viewers of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City saw Robert appear in multiple episodes of the Bravo series.
In season four, Mary Cosby reacted to the news that her son had secretly wed Alexiana without her being aware.
The wedding reportedly took place in August 2022 at a Utah courthouse.
The show also included a storyline where Mary dealt with the reported substance use issues of Robert and Alexiana.
Robert had a history of legal issues.
He was arrested in Utah in September and faces several charges, such as trespassing and assault.
I remember when he was arrested back in 2022. Apparently, he was driving under the influence, and the police discovered he didn’t have a valid driver’s license and hadn’t been following the rules of the road. It was a pretty serious situation.
He later pleaded guilty to the DUI charge.
In January, during the second part of the season 6 reunion for The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Mary discussed her son’s arrest and his time in jail.
She said she knew he was in a place where he wasn’t using drugs. While it’s been a difficult experience for him, she feels it’s a necessary one, and she’s handling it alright.
As a mother, she admitted it’s heartbreaking to watch her child struggle, but she understands it’s ultimately for the best. She’d much rather he face these challenges than be in a worse situation.
