Morty instantly falls for a new Japanese exchange student, Chigusa, and is inspired by her favorite manga about school clubs. He quickly starts a Science Club, roping in Rick as the advisor. Along with a group of unlikely friends (and Chigusa), Rick leads the new club in a competition against the established Science Club. Their rivalry takes a bizarre turn when Rick opens a portal to Akihabara, Japan – a hub for anime, manga, and maid cafés. After a chaotic trip (and being chased out of Japan by angry maids), the club returns with a plan for the school festival: a science-themed maid café serving strange and experimental drinks.
What do the creators of Rick and Morty: The Manga have to say about this volume?
Josh Tierney, in a statement from Oni Press, explained that combining his love of dark, quirky humor with his lifelong manga collection made writing this book a dream come true. He jokingly admitted to using the project as an excuse to rewatch Rick and Morty repeatedly, and said the book is especially for fans who share both passions. He hopes readers will enjoy getting lost in the world of Akiba alongside him.
JeyOdin shared that Volume 2 was a blast to work on, even though it doesn’t directly follow the previous storyline. Having been a professional manga artist since age 19, they’re incredibly honored to be illustrating the Rick and Morty Manga. This volume is packed with everything – humor, action, and even a bit of mystery! It takes readers to Akihabara, the heart of anime and manga culture, and explores how a love for Maid Cafes can lead to unexpected chaos.
