‘Everyone asks why my mouth is like this’: MAFS Bec reveals the real story behind her facial difference – and the celebrity surgeon uncle who transformed her life

Following criticism of her actions on Married At First Sight, Bec Zacharia has shared an unexpected link to some of Sydney’s most prominent and influential families.

Let me tell you, I’ve seen a lot of transformations in my line of work, and it’s fascinating! My uncle, Dr. Michael Zacharia, is a really sought-after cosmetic surgeon. He’s incredibly popular with a lot of well-known women in the city’s most exclusive circles – think socialites and those who are always perfectly put-together. He really keeps them looking and feeling their best!

Bec explained to the Mail that Michael is her uncle, as he’s her father’s brother.

My family is very close-knit. I regularly see and talk to my brother, his wife, and their children. When I’m in Sydney, I stay with them at their home in Bellevue Hill. He’s a wonderful source of support for me.

Dr. Zacharia, a highly respected expert in his field, attended his niece’s wedding on Married at First Sight with his wife, Kim, according to Bec.

‘They were there to support me, and so was his son, Sam.’

Sam is most famous for his short relationship with Francesca Packer, who is now engaged to Robert Bates, a businessman who previously appeared on a list of Australia’s wealthiest young people, but has been the subject of controversy.

Bec shared that her uncle, who is also used to being in the spotlight, gave her some advice when she told him she was joining the show.

‘His advice to me was to be as authentic as possible,’ she explained.

Having experienced fame himself, he explained that public attention can be both good and bad, but advised me to stay positive and remember that difficult times don’t last forever.

Throughout the season, several heated arguments at dinner parties – particularly those involving Bec – received negative press. Bec has since confessed she worried her actions might bring unwanted attention to her family.

‘He [Dr Zacharia] is overseas at the moment, so I haven’t spoken to him,’ she said.

I did send them a message suggesting they skip tonight’s dinner party. I’m just feeling really down on myself and don’t want to bring everyone else down too.

His response was immediate reassurance.

He reassured me that I hadn’t disappointed him, and added that what mattered most was that I had learned from the experience.

Bec is thankful for her uncle in ways that go beyond his support during and after her controversial time on a reality show.

I was so moved when she shared her story! She explained that Dr. Zacharia completely rebuilt her jaw when she was just 21. Apparently, she was born with a pretty severe chin deformity, and Dr. Zacharia’s surgery gave her a whole new life. It was incredibly brave of her to talk about it.

‘I was actually born with a jaw, sort of a chin defect,’ she said.

People often ask about the appearance of my mouth and jaw. It’s something that came up because I had reconstructive jaw surgery performed by my Uncle Michael when I was around 20 or 21 years old.

The procedure completely transformed her confidence.

I’m really happy with how my jaw and chin look now thanks to him. Before his work, it was a major insecurity.

Growing up, I almost always wore my hair down because I was really self-conscious about my jawline and chin – I was born with a very weak chin.

For twenty years, I really struggled with my self-confidence, constantly worrying about how I looked. But when I turned twenty-one, I finally took the plunge and had surgery. I know some people aren’t kind about my mouth and jaw now, but honestly, it was the best thing I ever did. It completely changed my life, and I owe it all to my Uncle Michael.

As for future cosmetic tweaks?

Bec laughed that she’d happily put her trust in her uncle again – even if he doesn’t always agree.

She said she planned to visit him when she could. She really wants to get a nose job, but he won’t let her.
